Job description

We are seeking experienced Controls Engineer to support retrofit, launch, and validation work within General Motors (GM) manufacturing plants.

This is a hands-on, plant-floor role focused on supporting closure lines and body-in-white systems. The work involves validating installed equipment, troubleshooting controls issues, and executing GM production and safety checklists during line modifications and ramp-up activities.

This is not a design role-candidates must be comfortable working directly on active production lines in a fast-paced manufacturing environment., * Support retrofit (“kit”) work on existing GM production lines

  • Perform validation and checklist execution (SCS, NPS, red tag / green tag audits)
  • Troubleshoot PLC, HMI, and robotic systems on the plant floor
  • Verify tooling, equipment, and system functionality during installation and ramp-up
  • Work alongside plant teams to support production readiness and issue resolution
  • Assist with startup, commissioning, and line support activities, * Work closely with Robotic supervisor/s and department leads
  • Follow GM structure for robot programs and overall architecture
  • Maintain and support departments
  • Program robot paths, set up program structure and implement offline programming
  • Configure robot IO, weld interface and program call
  • Anticipate and solve robotic problems (troubleshoot)
  • Read and interpret electrical/Pneumatic schematics and specifications
  • Perform assigned tasks in a safe manner and know how to properly lock out all energy sources, including stored energy (GM MPS) This could be acquired at a later date but is preferred as training dates for this are very random.
  • Work with other programmers to enhance each others skill level(s)
  • Perform other reasonable duties as required

Requirements

  • Prior experience working inside GM manufacturing plants
  • Direct experience with closure lines (doors, hoods, liftgates, fenders) or body-in-white systems
  • Experience with retrofit, launch, or production support in automotive environments
  • Hands-on troubleshooting experience with:
  • Allen-Bradley PLCs (RSLogix 5000 / Studio 5000)
  • HMIs (FactoryTalk, Siemens TIA Portal)
  • Strong understanding of plant-floor processes, safety protocols, and validation procedures
  • Experience with GM Global Common Controls (GCCS) standards
  • GM-related certifications (GCCS, hardware/network training, etc.)
  • Experience working on multiple GM plants or automotive programs
  • Background with robotics (Fanuc, ABB, KUKA)

Education

  • Degree not required
  • Relevant hands-on experience in GM environments is the priority

Work Environment

  • 100% onsite in active manufacturing plants
  • Fast-paced, high-production environment
  • Must be comfortable working on the plant floor for extended periods, * Minimum Five(5) years of hands-on experience programming robots. (Fanuc Robots, GM wizard, GRS cert and 2yrs of GM project exposure is essential)
  • Knowledge and experience using Fanuc DCS software
  • Previous Fanuc Roboguide experience an asset
  • Degree, Diploma or Certificate from a Mechatronics; Automation and Robotics Technician; Robotics and Industrial Automation or similar applicable course.
  • Experience in robotic servo resistance welding and material handling is required, Sealer systems would be beneficial, (Robotic guided vision would be a big asset Keyence 3D bin picking and/or Photoneo 3D bin pick) **3D bin pick experience would really help them stand out to us in considering possible selection.
  • Excellent understanding of robotic coordinate systems.
  • Working knowledge of communication protocols (Enet IP)
  • Good understanding of GM robot program flow and programming theories
  • Understanding robot safety setup, familiar with ANSI 10218-2 robotic safety standards
  • Computer skills using Microsoft Word, Excel and AutoCAD
  • Good mathematical and organizational skills
  • Practical experience and understanding of electrical circuitry and wiring
  • Good verbal and written communication skills (English)
  • Ability to work as a team member and individually
