Job description

OVERVIEW

Health Advocates is a small, dynamic nonprofit with a 40-year history of serving older New Yorkers. With a staff of six and an annual budget of approximately $850,000, we provide free programs and services that promote healthy aging for more than 1,500 adults age 60+ each year.

We are seeking an organized, mission-driven fundraising professional to partner with the Executive Director in sustaining and growing philanthropic support. This role blends strategic planning-including campaign development, donor engagement, and volunteer support-with hands-on execution such as grant writing, appeals, donor database management, acknowledgements, and event planning. Success in this position requires excellent communication and organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities independently.

This is an excellent opportunity for a collaborative fundraiser who enjoys both strategy and hands-on work. As Health Advocates’ lead development professional, you will play a central role in shaping fundraising initiatives, strengthening relationships with donors and volunteers, and helping a respected community organization expand its impact.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Grant Management

  • Funder Maintenance: Apply to and report on grants from existing foundation funders (about 20 current funders)
  • Research prospective funders and submit letters of inquiry
  • Collaboration: Work with program staff to gather data and narratives for proposals
  • Strategy & Tracking: Develop a grant calendar to track deadlines

Special Events

  • Oversee logistics for two special events each year including organizing invitations and event materials, managing event budgets, vendor relations, and on-site logistics.
  • Support committees of volunteers who generate event participation.

Individual Fundraising

  • Execute annual donor campaigns (digital and direct mail) to meet fundraising goals
  • Assist the Development Committee of the Board of Directors with fundraising initiatives
  • Support donor cultivation, stewardship, and solicitation activities in partnership with the Executive Director

Fundraising Operations

  • Donor Management: Track and report on donor information, history, and segmentation; accurately record donations; thoughtfully and promptly acknowledge contributions
  • Recurring Donation Program: Implement tools for a monthly giving program that provides a consistent revenue stream for the organization

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 4-7 years of progressively responsible nonprofit fundraising experience, preferably within a small non-profit setting
  • Demonstrated success securing foundation grants
  • Experience managing multiple types of fundraising projects simultaneously
  • “Hands-on” mindset: A proactive self-starter who is willing to perform both strategic and administrative tasks.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to draft compelling, mission-aligned proposals, solicitations and acknowledgements
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Technical proficiency: Strong experience with DonorPerfect (or another CRM) and MS Office Suite
