Job description

As Waste Technical Support Officer, you will enable the safe, efficient and environmentally responsible operation of our in-house recycling and waste disposal services. Working in this varied role, you will combine site-based activity, data analysis, auditing, compliance monitoring and business administration; to improve the way we manage safety, environmental performance, quality standards and operational policy. What you will be doing:

  • Working with the waste lead, site teams, colleagues, contractors, regulators and partners, you will help improve and develop safety, health, environment and quality to maintain high standards and drive continuous improvement.
  • You will promote safe working practice and continuously review compliance standards, carrying out site inspections, audits and reviews across our waste facilities, identifying opportunities to improve performance and reduce risk.
  • Supporting the management team, you will develop our health and safety reporting systems, monitoring of key performance indicators and performance measures across the waste service. You will also support with compliance for Environment Agency permits, trade effluent consents and other environmental obligations.
  • Contributing to carbon, environmental and sustainability reporting, you will support climate ambitions, by using data, reports and performance information to identify trends, highlight risks and support informed decision-making.
  • As a good problem solver, you will help identify smarter, innovative ways of working through better use of data, systems and technology and will make a tangible difference to essential public services., * As part of the Recycling and Waste Disposal team, you’ll be based at Dean Road, Yate, with hybrid working, meaning that you will work at home part week and on sites across our four waste sites in Yate, Mangotsfield, Little Stoke and Thornbury.
  • You may be required to travel across the authority’s waste and recycling sites, therefore, you must either hold a full UK driving licence and have access to a vehicle or be able to meet the travel requirements of the role through other suitable means.
  • The role involves some evening and occasional weekend work to support disposal activities, which is shared across the team.

Requirements

  • It is essential that you have good written and numeracy skills, be experienced in the use of excel for calculations, and confident with report writing in various forms.
  • We require you to have excellent administrative skills, to effectively maintain accurate records, manage documentation and keep systems up to date, with a strong attention to detail and takes pride in producing high-quality work.
  • You will be able to builds strong relationships and communicates confidently with people at all levels and shows resilience, adaptability and a willingness to challenge the status quo constructively.
  • It is key that you are comfortable working with data and using information to identify trends and support decision-making and enjoys learning new systems, technologies and ways of working.
  • You must have an interest in continuous improvement and delivering practical business benefits, and be motivated, curious, have a positive approach and happy to take ownership to look for opportunities to make suggest change.
