Job description

Hybrid working within this role enables a balance of 50 per cent of time split between the office and home over a 4-week period. Hybrid working arrangements can evolve subject to business requirements, We are looking for a Senior Transport Visualisation & Data Developer -a hybrid role for someone who understands traffic modelling methodologies and possesses the technical skills to transform heavy datasets into compelling, interactive visual stories.

Whether you are building 3D game-engine simulations of new road layouts, developing interactive R Shiny dashboards for decision-makers, or scripting custom data pipelines to streamline Vissim/Visum outputs, your work will directly influence major London transport initiatives like Superloop and signal optimisation programs.

You’ll also play a key role in driving innovation, continually exploring new tools, technologies and techniques to enhance the way TfL visualises and communicates data, modelling outputs and network performance insights.

Key Accountabilities

Technical Visualisation : Design and build high-quality 2D/3D visual assets, interactive dashboards (e.g., R Shiny), and game engine environments (Unity) to explain complex transport concepts to non-technical stakeholders

Data & Modelling Integration : Develop custom scripts and automation tools to process, clean, and convert large traffic modelling outputs into visual pipelines

Cinematic & Spatial Content : Create accurate 3D animations, flythroughs, and visual assets representing proposed engineering and traffic schemes for public consultations, broadcast, and executive briefings

Process Optimisation : Collaborate with Transport Modellers to build custom tools and workflows that improve the speed, accuracy, and presentation of traffic models

Stakeholder Engagement : Translate detailed transport analysis insights into clear, persuasive visual narratives for decision-makers and the public

Standards & Innovation : Drive technical best practices across the team by exploring emerging visual technologies, real-time rendering tools, and data analytics frameworks.

Requirements

All offers of employment are subject to satisfactory right-to-work checks. Candidates must be able to demonstrate their right to work in the UK. At the present time TfL is unable to offer visa sponsorship for this role., Data Processing & Scripting : Strong coding capability (e.g., C#, Python, R, or C++) to write custom scripts, automate data processing, and handle large transport datasets (Essential)

Visual & Spatial Design : Methodical approach to creating high-quality visual outputs with a keen eye for accurate spatial presentation, detail, and clear layout (Essential)

Analytical & Problem Solving : Excellent numeracy and logical problem-solving skills, with a high standard for maintaining clean code and data accuracy (Essential)

Technical Communication : Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the proven ability to translate complex engineering concepts into accessible visual formats for diverse audiences (Essential)

Project Prioritisation : Ability to define technical requirements, manage individual deliverables, and deliver high-quality outputs to agreed deadlines (Highly Desirable)

Knowledge

Transport Modelling Software : Working knowledge and clear understanding of standard micro/macro traffic modelling tools (e.g., Vissim, Visum, or LinSig) (Essential)

Real-Time & Interactive Software : Working knowledge of interactive web applications or game engines used for visual rendering (e.g., Unity, R Shiny, 3ds Max) (Essential)

Traffic Engineering Principles : Understanding of core traffic management concepts and signal control techniques (Essential)

Urban Traffic Control (UTC) : Awareness of London UTC systems and adaptive control strategies such as SCOOT (Desirable)

Production Pipelines : Understanding of digital rendering, animation, and video post-production workflows (e.g., Adobe Creative Cloud / After Effects) (Desirable)

Experience

Hybrid Visual & Data Delivery : Practical experience transforming complex raw datasets into interactive visual dashboards, 3D environments, or technical graphics (Essential)

Traffic & Spatial Data Handling : Experience working directly with traffic modelling outputs, spatial datasets, or transport network data (Essential)

Client & Stakeholder Presentation : Proven experience conceptualising and presenting visual proposals or technical insights to non-technical decision-makers (Highly Desirable)

Industry Background : Experience gained within a transport planning, civil engineering, data visualization, or visual effects/design consultancy environment (Desirable)

Education & Qualifications : Relevant degree, HNC, or equivalent practical experience in Traffic Engineering, Computer Science, Data Visualisation, or a related technical discipline (Essential)
