Job description

You will build and own backend services - event-driven, serverless, multi-tenant, handling sensitive data. You will also connect our cloud to customer networks, which in healthcare means real networking work, not just an API key.

This is a customer-facing engineering role. You will sit on calls with clients, gather requirements directly, and translate what they describe into what actually needs to be built. There is no product manager buffering you from the customer. If that sounds like a downside, this isn’t the right role.

We are AI-native by default. Our engineers ship with Claude Code as a primary tool. We expect you to move fast with AI assistance and to have the judgment to know when the generated code is wrong. Speed without rigor doesn’t survive a HIPAA audit.

What You’ll Do

  • Design and ship backend services and APIs on AWS serverless infrastructure
  • Build event-driven workflows that process high volumes of documents, transactions, and system events
  • Stand up and troubleshoot secure connectivity to customer environments - site-to-site VPNs, private networking, on-prem integration gateways
  • Integrate with third-party systems and external APIs across varying levels of documentation and reliability
  • Own your services in production: monitoring, alerting, on-call, root cause analysis
  • Use Claude and agentic tooling aggressively to compress build cycles - then review, test, and harden what comes out
  • Run requirements conversations with customers directly - ask the right questions, separate the stated request from the underlying problem, and confirm scope before you build
  • Own large projects end to end: scope, design, build, deliver, and communicate status without being managed through it

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related engineering field - master’s preferred
  • 2-5 years building production backend systems
  • Strong in TypeScript and Node.js - it’s our stack end to end
  • Solid API design, data modeling, and relational database fundamentals

AWS & Serverless

  • Hands-on depth across the serverless stack: Lambda, API Gateway, EventBridge, SQS/SNS, Step Functions, DynamoDB, S3
  • IAM, VPC configuration, and Secrets Manager in practice, not just in theory
  • Infrastructure as code (CDK, Terraform, or SAM)
  • CloudWatch - you can find the answer in the logs

Networking

  • Deep understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, TLS, routing, NAT, and firewall rules
  • Practical VPN experience: IPsec site-to-site tunnels, split tunneling, subnet and CIDR planning
  • You can debug a connectivity issue across a customer boundary without guessing

AI-Assisted Development (“Vibe Coding”)

  • You use Claude, Claude Code, or comparable agentic tools as a daily driver
  • You prompt well, iterate fast, and produce working software in hours rather than days
  • Critically: you read what the model writes. You catch the subtle bug, the missing edge case, the insecure default. AI accelerates you - it doesn’t think for you., * Strong verbal and written communication - you can hold a room on a client call and write a clear summary afterward
  • Skilled at requirements gathering: you listen, ask clarifying questions, and get to the actual problem instead of building the first thing someone asked for
  • Can explain technical tradeoffs to a non-technical stakeholder without condescending or losing them
  • Proactive with status: you flag risks and slips early rather than going quiet

Ownership

  • Proven track record running large projects independently from requirements through delivery
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and shifting priorities in an early-stage company
  • Bias toward shipping, then measuring

Nice to Have

  • HL7 v2 or FHIR experience - interface engines, message flows, FHIR resources and APIs
  • Healthcare or HIPAA-regulated software background
  • Multi-tenant SaaS architecture
  • LLM application work: prompt engineering, RAG, tool use, evals, * Master’s (Required)
