Job description
Our Charlotte platform team is hiring a Senior DevOps Engineer to directly manage our production AWS environments and Kubernetes clusters. You will not be starting from scratch; your immediate focus will be migrating legacy microservices to EKS, refactoring our existing Terraform state, and cutting down deployment times by optimizing our GitLab CI/CD pipelines.
This is a hands-on engineering role requiring deep Linux internals knowledge, strict adherence to Infrastructure as Code (IaC), and experience debugging live distributed systems.
Technical Responsibilities
- Provision, scale, and maintain AWS infrastructure (EC2, RDS, MSK, ElastiCache) strictly through Terraform, managing state files via Terraform Cloud.
- Write, test, and deploy Helm charts for containerized Go and Python microservices running on AWS EKS.
- Architect and maintain multi-stage GitLab CI/CD pipelines, integrating automated unit testing and container vulnerability scanning (e.g., Trivy, SonarQube).
- Troubleshoot complex production networking and traffic routing issues involving AWS ALBs, NGINX Ingress controllers, and VPC peering.
- Configure Datadog APM, set up distributed tracing, and write custom PromQL queries to trigger automated PagerDuty alerts for latency and error rate spikes.
- Write Python or Bash scripts to automate routine operations, such as database snapshot management, IAM role rotation, and log archival.
- Participate in a Tier-3 on-call rotation to diagnose node failures, memory leaks, or DNS resolution issues in real-time.
Requirements
- 5+ years of production experience as a DevOps Engineer, SRE, or Linux Systems Administrator.
- Deep, practical experience building and deploying infrastructure using Terraform (not just modifying existing templates).
- Proven experience administering Kubernetes in production (EKS preferred), including debugging pods, managing secrets, and configuring CNI plugins.
- Strong scripting skills in Python, Go, or Bash.
- Extensive experience with Linux operating systems, including performance tuning and CLI troubleshooting (strace, tcpdump, netstat).
- Solid understanding of cloud networking (Subnets, NAT Gateways, Security Groups, Route53).
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent technical background.
- Must hold valid US work authorization without requiring current or future sponsorship.
