Job description

This is a junior backend role on a small, senior team. You’ll write real code that ships to production early: features across our GraphQL API, our serverless services, and the Postgres data model underneath. These are the systems that validate payments, onboard vendors, and guard tax and identity data., * Write backend features in TypeScript on AWS Lambda, backed by Postgres and Hasura GraphQL.

  • Work on the data model and API: writing migrations, adjusting Hasura permissions, running GraphQL codegen.
  • Help build and maintain integrations with our fintech and compliance partners.
  • Learn how we handle sensitive data like tax IDs, identity documents, and payment details, behind encryption and tight access controls.
  • Pitch in on the logic behind global payouts, W-9/W-8 collection, tax validation, and 1099s.
  • Help keep things healthy in production with OpenTelemetry, Sentry, and Pino.
  • Write tests that actually catch bugs (Jest, plus Playwright for end-to-end).
  • Build alongside product and frontend engineers in a Next.js app., TypeScript · Node.js 20 · Next.js · React · Hasura GraphQL · PostgreSQL · AWS Lambda · Serverless Framework · CloudFormation · AWS KMS · Auth0 · Apollo/GraphQL Codegen · Plaid · Unit · Codat · Persona · TaxBit · OpenTelemetry · Sentry · Pino · Jest · Playwright · Doppler · Docker

Requirements

  • You’ve written real code, whether through a degree, a bootcamp, an internship, or projects you built yourself. Call it 0 to 2 years in.
  • You know your way around TypeScript or JavaScript and Node, and you want to get good at it.
  • You understand the basics of databases and SQL. Postgres is a plus, not a must.
  • You’ve built or called an API before. If GraphQL is new to you, no problem; curiosity beats mastery here.
  • You’re careful. When money and someone’s tax data are on the line, asking a question beats guessing.
  • You can explain your thinking, in code and in writing.
  • You like feedback and want to get better at the craft.

NICE TO HAVE

  • Any hands-on time with AWS or serverless.
  • A rough grasp of auth (JWTs, OAuth) or handling sensitive data.
  • An interest in fintech: payments, tax, banking, KYC, moving money around.
  • Bits of our stack: Hasura, Segment, Twilio, SendGrid.
  • Curiosity about building for many countries at once, with different currencies and languages.

WHY LUMANU

Your code will move real money for real people, probably in your first month. The team is small, so what you build matters and you’ll see the impact fast. And the problems are the fun kind of hard: payments, compliance, encryption, and infrastructure that reaches 180 countries. It’s a good place to go from junior to strong quickly.

Lumanu is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds and are committed to building an inclusive team.

Compensation Range: $70K - $100K
