Engineering Associate

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Central Region, is looking for an Engineering Assistant 3 / Engineering Associate / Engineer/Architect 1 Flex in Anchorage to help us Keep Alaska Moving! Base Salary Information:Engineering Assistant 3: $44.49 / hourly (OT Eligible) Engineering Associate: $44.49 / hourly (OT Eligible) Engineer/Architect 1: $3563.25 / bi-weekly (OT Ineligible)

What you will be doing:

This flex-position in our Preliminary Design and Environmental Services section offers a growth path from Engineering Assistant 3 through Engineering Associate to Engineer/Architect 1, giving you the opportunity to advance as you gain experience and licensure.

Engineering Assistant 3 level - You’ll work under the guidance of a registered professional engineer and lead consultant teams in solving real transportation engineering challenges-from developing design study reports and roadway geometrics to preparing drainage and accident analyses, cost estimates, and other essential project documents.

Engineering Associate level - You’ll take on a Senior Engineer role, guiding consultants in producing complete, bid-ready plans, specifications, and estimates for highway improvement projects.

Engineer/Architect 1 level - You’ll serve as a first-level registered professional engineer, supporting an Engineering Manager by reviewing designs for compliance with federal and state requirements, coordinating professional service contracts, and helping deliver high-quality plan sets for both state-funded and federal-aid projects. In this role, you may also professionally seal engineering documents. You will collaborate with multiple functional groups within the Department, coordinate with staff from multiple areas of expertise, and assist with public and agency meetings to successfully construct capital improvement projects in Central Region, thereby delivering the Department’s mission. • Learning: Uses efficient learning techniques to acquire and apply new knowledge and skills; uses training, feedback, or other opportunities for self-learning and development.

Special Note:

• Valid Driver’s License is preferred but not required.
• If applying for the Engineer/Architect 1 level, a Professional Engineer license in the field of Civil Engineering is mandatory.
• Engineer-in-training certification is preferred but not required., Engineering Assistant 3: Bachelor’s degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET. AND Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or: A bachelor’s degree with a major in a branch of engineering from an institution not accredited by ABET. AND An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination. AND Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitutions: Four years of any combination of ABET accredited postsecondary education in engineering, architecture, or land surveying (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) and/or engineering, architectural or land surveying experience may substitute for the required degree.

Graduate study in engineering or architecture may be substituted for the required experience (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month)., Eight years of progressively responsible work experience in engineering, land surveying or architecture, of which one year was as an Engineering Assistant 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere., ABET accredited college or technical school courses in engineering, architecture, land surveying or a closely related curriculum may be substituted for the non-specific required experience (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month). A bachelor’s degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET may substitute for four years of the non-specific required experience.

Engineer/Architect 1: Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Architect., * Copy of academic transcripts (unofficial are okay, please ensure that the institution name/URL is listed on the transcript) if using education to verify that you meet the minimum qualifications.

• Copy of your valid driver’s license.
• Three (3) professional references, including name, job title, and current phone numbers., This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the Engineering Assistant 3, Engineering Associate, or Engineer/Architect 1 level, depending on the applicant’s training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at a lower level, promotion to the higher level will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class., Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the above requirements, if applicable. If utilizing this education you must show that the education credentials have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and that such education has been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs; or an accredited U.S. state university reports the other institution as one whose transcript is given full value, or full value is given in subject areas applicable to the curricula at the state university. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.
