Job description

The Green Technology Systems & Solutions group within Siemens Utility Technologies is dedicated to accelerating the energy transition by delivering grid-scale photovoltaic solutions that integrate seamlessly into utility and community solar infrastructure. Our portfolio includes three-phase string inverters using virtual central architectures as well as large central inverter systems, supported by comprehensive control, protection, and integration solutions. By combining Siemens’ power systems expertise with strong project execution, we deliver turnkey PV solutions that reduce integration risk, accelerate deployment timelines, and support customers’ decarbonization goals.

We’re seeking a Project Engineer to join our Greentech engineering group focusing on PV Inverter Engineering team. This role is based out of Wendell, NC.

We’re particularly interested in SCADA and controls engineers looking to expand their expertise into renewable energy systems integration, as well as PV systems engineers with project execution experience.

You’ll make an impact by:

  • Leading photovoltaic inverter projects end-to-end, from contract award through commissioning, ensuring alignment with customer requirements and specifications
  • Drive project execution, ensure technical excellence across every phase, and become a trusted point of contact for customers and cross-functional teams alike
  • Managing engineering deliverables, including multi-stage drawing submittals, technical reviews, and maintaining accurate project documentation
  • Configuring and integrating inverter and control systems, including parameter programming and coordination of communication protocols such as Modbus
  • Acting as the technical project lead, collaborating across engineering, sales, procurement, manufacturing, and quality teams to drive execution and resolve issues proactively
  • Engaging directly with customers to clarify requirements, present technical solutions, and manage expectations throughout the project lifecycle
  • Maintaining high standards of process execution, including purchase requisitions, documentation, testing records, and project closeout
  • Creating and maintaining engineering documentation such as single-line diagrams, control schematics, bills of material, and configuration records to ensure traceability and quality
  • Supporting broader initiatives as experience grows, including pre-award engineering, mentoring junior team members, and contributing to process improvements and strategic projects

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (or equivalent field);
  • 3+ years of experience supporting utility-scale photovoltaic systems, string inverters, energy storage, or commercial solar engineering projects
  • Experience with SCADA systems design, configuration, or system integration in energy or infrastructure environments
  • Experience with inverter controls, testing, and industrial communication protocols, including Modbus RTU/TCP Technical proficiency in reading and interpreting electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, and RFP documentation.
  • Understanding of utility-scale PV system architecture, 3-phase string inverter (Virtual Central) configurations, and grid interconnection requirements.
  • Hands-on experience with SCADA integration and industrial communication protocols, including Modbus protocol configuration and troubleshooting. This includes parameter mapping, register configuration, and communication diagnostics between inverter systems and utility SCADA platforms.
  • Familiarity with North American (UL) and/or European regulatory standards for grid-interactive inverters., * Master’s degree is strongly preferred.
  • AutoCAD, Visio, or equivalent CAD/drafting experience.
  • Proficiency with Siemens engineering and project management tools (or demonstrated ability to learn new platforms quickly).
  • Experience with ERP systems (SAP preferred) for purchase orders, BOMs, and order acknowledgements.
  • Advanced SCADA and controls experience, including DNP3, IEC 61850, or other industrial communication protocols beyond Modbus.
  • Exposure to OEM inverter parameter programming, SCADA integration fieldwork, or commissioning on PV installations.
  • Exposure to utility substations, generation assets, or large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • Multilingual capabilities (Spanish/German a plus).
  • Experience transitioning from SCADA/controls roles into renewable energy systems integration.
  • Detail-oriented and disciplined, committed to accuracy, documentation rigor, and on-time delivery.
  • A go-getter attitude and genuine willingness to learn; comfort stepping up to support when the team is stretched, with a bias toward action and problem-solving.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, comfortable interacting with customers, OEM partners, and cross-functional internal teams at all levels.
