Job description

The Technology team plays a key role in keeping PPL’s systems stable, secure and effective for colleagues across the business. Working closely with internal users and technology teams, the team helps ensure PPL’s applications and services are well supported, monitored and continuously improved.

What you’ll be doing:

As Application Support Engineer, you’ll be at the heart of Technology operations, providing hands-on technical support, system administration and monitoring for key business applications and services. You’ll act as an important link between users and technology teams, helping to resolve issues, maintain service quality and support systems that are critical to PPL’s day-to-day work.

This role would suit someone with a broad technical skillset who enjoys problem-solving, takes ownership of their work and is keen to keep developing their expertise across applications, cloud, automation and operational support., * Support and troubleshoot business applications and services, taking ownership of incidents and service requests through to resolution.

  • Use scripting languages such as Python, Java or Shell script to support automation, diagnostics and data handling.
  • Query and analyse data using SQL to support incident resolution, investigation and operational insight.
  • Support and interact with AWS services, including Step Functions and related components.
  • Perform controlled administrative tasks on production systems, following change, security and risk procedures.
  • Triage, prioritise and manage incoming tickets through the service management system, ensuring timely resolution in line with SLAs.
  • Complete daily health checks across applications, environments and monitoring dashboards.
  • Proactively identify, investigate and resolve system issues and alerts, escalating more complex incidents with clear diagnostic detail and context.
  • Maintain system documentation, contribute to knowledge bases and support knowledge-sharing across the team.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, monitoring, automation and system performance.

Requirements

You’ll be calm and methodical under pressure, with a proactive approach and a strong sense of ownership. You’ll enjoy working with stakeholders, solving problems and building your technical knowledge over time. You’ll be comfortable balancing competing priorities in a busy support environment, while maintaining accuracy, professionalism and strong attention to detail.

Key Requirements:

  • Experience in an Application Support, Technology Operations or similar role.
  • Experience working with ticketing or service management systems.
  • Exposure to Java applications, SQL and cloud platforms, ideally AWS.
  • Experience supporting production or business-critical environments.
  • Clear and professional communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Strong planning and organisation skills, with the ability to prioritise workload effectively in a busy support environment.
  • Sound judgement and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyse issues and identify practical solutions.
  • A proactive approach to learning and continuous improvement.

Desirable experience:

  • Experience with monitoring tools and alerting frameworks.
  • Experience of Oracle Databases, Snowflake, Tableau or working with high data volumes.
  • Experience of languages such as PLSQL, shell scripts, Java or Python.
  • Knowledge of Salesforce.
  • Understanding of ITIL processes, including Incident, Problem and Change.
  • Experience with Linux or Windows system administration.
  • Interest in automation, DevOps, AI-enabled efficiency or continuous improvement.
