Job description

We’re hiring a Remote Sensing / Computer Vision Specialist to join TreeStock full-time in Sheffield. This is a hybrid role, and we’re flexible on the balance between office and home working, with the option to be in the office full-time if you’d prefer.

You’ll work on the core science behind our forest digital twins, applying computer vision and machine learning to Earth Observation and UAV-captured imagery to extract individual tree detections, species classifications and structural measurements at forest scale. You’ll set the direction of our EO and computer vision work, working with the wider team to make sure your models connect properly with the wider data pipeline.

Day to day, that means processing and classifying multispectral imagery, building and refining detection and classification models, working with drone-captured datasets from active survey sites and validating outputs against ground-truth field data as we scale to new sites and species. You’ll work closely with our product teams to get your outputs into the platform in a form that’s genuinely useful to the people using it. Getting out into the field occasionally to fly drones and see how the data is actually captured is a real part of the role (wellies recommended).

We’re not a typical 9 to 5 environment as we don’t punch timecards or watch the clock here. As long as you bring passion, we’re flexible, as we care about the work being done well far more than when or how.

Requirements

We know it’s unlikely that any one person ticks most box below, this is a broad and fairly specialist field. If you have a genuine passion for Earth Observation, remote sensing or computer vision and want to apply it to something with real environmental impact, we’d still love to hear from you even if your experience doesn’t map onto most below.

  • 2+ years of experience in remote sensing, Earth Observation, computer vision or a closely related applied ML field
  • Hands-on experience with Python and modern ML/CV frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow
  • Experience working with multispectral or hyperspectral imagery, whether from satellite, aerial or drone platforms
  • Familiarity with Earth Observation data sources such as Sentinel-2, Landsat or similar
  • Understanding of core remote sensing concepts such as spectral indices, radiometric or atmospheric correction, and image classification
  • Experience with geospatial tools such as QGIS, GDAL, rasterio or Google Earth Engine
  • Experience working closely with geospatial data scientists or geospatial data pipelines
  • Project management experience
  • Background or interest in forestry, ecology or environmental science
  • Comfortable working from our Sheffield office, with flexibility for hybrid working
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical decisions clearly to non-technical stakeholders, * Computer vision: 1 year (preferred)
  • Remote Sensing: 1 year (preferred)
  • Geospatial Data: 1 year (preferred)

About the company

TreeStock is a Sheffield-based forest technology startup built on a simple belief: trees and forests are too valuable to manage on guesswork. We combine UAV-captured data with machine learning to capture data on every individual tree at forest scale, turning it into detailed digital twins that foresters, ecologists and land managers can actually use.

Our purpose is to put genuinely state-of-the-art technology into the hands of the people working on the ground. Better tree data means healthier, better-managed forests and a clearer, more honest picture of the impact of environmental work. That sense of purpose is part of what draws people to TreeStock, alongside the pace and variety that comes with a fast-growing startup.
