Job description

HPC and Software Engineer for Earth Sciences applications (RE1)Within the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) Earth Sciences Department, led by Prof. Francisco Doblas?Reyes, the department aims to deliver novel, advanced, high?resolution global climate models capable of simulating and predicting climate estimations with unprecedented reliability.The successful candidate will be part of the Performance Team, a sub?group of the Computational Earth Sciences section.The team, composed of 17 members and steadily growing, performs R&D in Earth system modelling (ESM) performance.Its goal is to identify model bottlenecks and research how to remove them.The team uses cutting?edge performance tools to evaluate and represent multiple performance metrics.Once bottlenecks are identified, experts modify the code without impacting the final results, using more efficient numerical algorithms or altering how the model exploits HPC infrastructure.Key Duties- Work within an international multidisciplinary and innovative research group.- Improve computational metrics that quantify the computational and energy cost of models for Destination Earth, FUTURA, ENES?RISE projects and other departmental projects.- Conduct carbon?footprint and energy?efficiency quantification tasks.Requirements- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related discipline.- Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience: Experience in running and optimizing scientific codes on large HPC systems; experience with software for evaluating Earth System Models using computational performance metrics.- Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience: Demonstrated verbal communication and technical presentation skills; fluency in English.- Competences: Highly motivated and willing to work in an international multidisciplinary group.Conditions- Location: BSC, Earth Sciences Department.- Contract: Full?time, 35 h/week, open?ended due to project and budget duration.- Benefits: Flexible working hours, an extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, support for relocation procedures.- Holidays: 22 days of vacation + 6 personal days + 24th and 31st of December as per collective agreement.- Salary: Competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience, and adjusted for cost of living in Barcelona.- Start date: As soon as possible.Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC)#J-*****-Ljbffr

Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related discipline.
