Senior Software Engineer

Experteer Overview As a Senior Software Engineer at PayPal, you will design and build scalable, fault-tolerant banking platforms that handle millions of daily transactions. You will implement exactly-once processing, improve settlement workflows, and optimize cross-border payments. You’ll debug high-pressure production issues, document solutions, and drive reliability and security through automated tests and code reviews. You’ll connect PayPal’s services to bank partners and payment networks, shaping how funds move across the PayPal family products. This role combines technical leadership with collaboration across product, risk, and infrastructure teams to scale our payments platform. Compensation / Benefits * Design, develop, and deploy scalable, fault-tolerant banking platforms * Implement idempotent systems with exactly-once guarantees * Debug production issues, document runbooks, and perform post-mortems * Apply currency conversion logic and develop settlement systems for merchant payouts * Develop APIs for PayPal mobile/web apps and integrate with partners * Connect to bank partners’ APIs and payment networks, build real-time webhooks * Collaborate with Product, Compliance, Risk, and Infrastructure teams to meet regulatory requirements and scale the platform * Maintain ACH processing engine and build features for instant transfers and wallet funding Tasks * Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field plus three years of relevant experience OR Bachelor’s degree plus five years of relevant experience * Experience designing and developing backend software with Java (OOP, multithreading, performance optimization) * Experience with relational databases such as Oracle (schema design, complex SQL, transactions) * Experience in end-to-end payment product design, especially bank settlement (Direct Deposit, clearing, returns) * Experience with payment platforms, settlement, reconciliation, and settlement lifecycle management * Experience with Direct Deposit products (Top Up, wallet funding) * Experience building settlement platforms and distributed file processing for returns/rejects/acknowledgments * Experience tuning distributed Java applications for scale in bank settlement processing * Experience building Java-based payment processing solutions for settlements against accounting ledgers * Experience debugging production issues and building automated prevention/detection/correction tools * Experience documenting system designs with UML Key requirements * comprehensive benefits * paid time off * healthcare coverage for you and family * financial security resources * hybrid work model * flexible work culture
