HMRC Chief Digital & Information Office is made up of Customer Groups which are working independently towards one common goal. Our role sits within HMRC’s Chief Digital & Information Office (CDIO) Group that deliver in-house solutions for projects and programmes that deal with a broad range of business, technical and operational issues. Our CDIO offices are hi-tech, state-of-the-art facilities that allow our teams to maximise their capabilities.

We are working to have clear career pathways and succession planning, to enable people to see our area as a long-term career with prospects and development opportunities for all roles., This is an exciting opportunity to join HMRC’s CDIO (Chief Digital & Information Officer), Borders and Trade Delivery Group working within the IT Operations space.

The role focuses on the management and oversight of Borders and Trade environments and services, ensuring platforms are reliable, secure and cost-effective. You will work closely with internal teams and third-party suppliers to coordinate activity across environments, ensuring that required work is delivered effectively and in line with operational priorities.

A strong technical understanding is important, enabling you to engage with engineering teams, understand issues and risks, and drive actions through to resolution.

Person specification

At this role level, you will:

• Oversee and manage Border and Trade platforms across all environments, working closely with internal teams and 3rd party suppliers to ensure services remain available, secure and performant.
• Track and manage environments and associated assets, using agreed tooling and processes to maintain accurate data, support reporting and provide insight into estate health and usage.
• Coordinate and assure patching and security activities, ensuring suppliers and internal teams deliver updates in line with agreed timelines and compliance standards.
• Own the management of cyber vulnerabilities and risks, ensuring issues are understood, prioritised and actively progressed to resolution with minimal business impact.
• Support the maintenance and improvement of environment and monitoring tooling, working with senior engineers and central teams to enhance capability and visibility.
• Develop and maintain clear processes, documentation and standards for environment and service management, ensuring consistency across Borders and Trade.
• Act as a point of coordination for incidents and service issues, working across teams to support triage, resolution and post-incident improvements.
• Identify trends, risks and opportunities for improvement, using monitoring data and operational insight to enhance system reliability and efficiency.
• Take an active role in FinOps and cost optimisation activities, helping ensure environments are managed in a cost-effective and sustainable way.

• Experience of working with or supporting IT environments or services.
• Experience of coordinating operational activities (e.g. patching, maintenance, or service changes) across teams or suppliers.
• Familiarity with tools such as Jira and Confluence, or similar.
• Ability to understand technical issues and risks and help drive actions through to resolution.
• Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and take ownership of tasks.
• Experience of working collaboratively as part of a team.

Desirable Criteria:

Ideally, the successful candidate will have experience in the use of some or all of the following:

• Experience working with Windows, Unix or Linux systems.
• Experience or exposure to cloud environments (e.g. AWS or Azure).
