Job description

As Technical Administrator, you are responsible for the management, further implementation and ongoing development of our research data infrastructure. You play a key role in supporting researchers and work closely with colleagues in the research facilities and in our central IT department. Because scientific research is constantly evolving - within a dynamic ICT environment with a diverse application landscape - no two days are the same. Your tasks will involve:

  • Implementing, managing and optimising our iRODS-based data infrastructure: you make sure that all research data - from millions of small files to genetic and imaging files of 100+ GB - is stored securely and quickly, distributed across cost-effective storage tiers ranging from fast storage to cold archive;
  • Helping shape strategic decisions about the future of our IT environment for scientific research;
  • Resolving tickets and supporting users in working with the data infrastructure;
  • Contributing to innovative ICT projects and developing new solutions;
  • Working together with internal colleagues and external suppliers on the quality and efficiency of our ICT systems.

Requirements

We are looking for a colleague who is energised by technical challenges and keen to contribute to scientific research. You’ll be a great fit if:

  • You have a bachelor’s (hbo) working and thinking level, preferably in the field of ICT.
  • You have experience with Linux and are familiar with programming and scripting languages such as Python, C++, C#, JavaScript and Bash. Knowledge of PostgreSQL and Azure/cloud storage solutions is a plus.
  • You have knowledge of research data management - or you are keen to develop further in this area, particularly with iRODS.
  • You are client- and results-oriented and keep an eye on quality.
  • You think analytically and stay calm under pressure.
  • You work just as easily independently as within a team.
  • You communicate clearly with both IT colleagues and researchers, and have a good command of English (a good command of Dutch is a plus, but not a requirement).
  • You approach your work in a structured, project-based and efficient way., bachelor hbo/wo

Benefits & conditions

At the Netherlands Cancer Institute, you work in an international, meaningful research environment where innovation is central - Where Science Meets Inspired Minds. The basis for your employment conditions is in accordance with the CLA Hospitals. You will receive from us:

Such appointments are accompanied by expectations of increased autonomy and responsibility, including the ability to independently manage more complex tasks and projects.
  • 144 holiday hours and 57 hours of Personal Life Budget, with full-time employment;
  • Annual holiday pay of 8.33% and a fixed end-of-year bonus of 8.33%;
  • A travel allowance of €0.23 per km;
  • Free parking at the Netherlands Cancer Institute. And with our bicycle plan and discount on public transport we also make it attractive for you to leave the car at home;

About the company

Do you want to put your IT skills to work for a meaningful mission? At the Netherlands Cancer Institute, the research institute of Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, you get exactly that opportunity. You make sure that valuable research data is stored securely, reliably and accessibly - the foundation on which our scientific research depends. Together with your colleagues, you further expand our iRODS-based data infrastructure and take it to the next level. In doing so, you contribute directly to our mission: “A cure for every cancer and excellent care for every patient.”, Science is at the heart of everything we do at the NKI. But breakthroughs don’t happen through science alone; they happen through people - curious minds, bold thinkers, people who challenge assumptions and turn complex questions into meaningful discoveries. Around 600 scientists, together with 150 scientific and 150 administrative professionals, work here across the full spectrum of cancer research, from fundamental science to clinical innovation. With roughly 55 nationalities represented, we form a vibrant international community where English is our shared language and every voice carries equal weight. Our institute sits just 15 minutes by bike from the heart of Amsterdam.
