Senior Software Engineer (UK Remote)

Experteer Overview As a Senior Backend Engineer at Turnitin, you will design and optimize scalable backend services using Java and serverless tech, while contributing to frontend components when needed. You’ll work within a shared services team to power Turnitin’s award-winning educational platform and uphold data-driven, reliable software. You’ll collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver innovative solutions, mentor juniors, and improve performance and cost-efficiency. Pay / Benefits * Design, develop, and optimize scalable backend services using Java and serverless technologies (AWS Lambda) * Design and implement RESTful APIs and event-driven architectures * Contribute to frontend components when needed * Improve performance and cost-efficiency of existing services * Collaborate with Architects, Product Managers, and engineering leads to deliver solutions * Mentor junior developers and promote best practices * Implement and maintain CI/CD pipelines * Ensure code quality through reviews, testing, and standards * Create documentation for shared components and usage guidelines Tasks * 8+ years of backend development experience with Java * Experience with serverless frameworks (AWS Lambda, Google Cloud Functions) * Frontend experience with React or Web Components * Strong understanding of distributed systems, scalability, and data modeling * Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams across distributed locations (Europe, USA) * Cloud proficiency in AWS (Lambda, DynamoDB, API Gateway, SNS/SQS/EventBridge) * Experience with design patterns, TDD, profiling, and debugging * Experience with CI/CD tools and automation * Effective communication in agile environments * Mentoring experience for junior engineers * Preferred: understanding or experience with AI/ML Key requirements * remote-first culture * health care coverage * education reimbursement * competitive paid time off * self-care days * national holidays and observed days off (including Juneteenth)
