Senior Software Engineer (UK Remote)

Experteer Overview As a Senior Backend Engineer at Turnitin, you will build scalable backend services and APIs powering our education platform. You’ll work on distributed, serverless systems and contribute to frontend components where needed, collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver high-performance software. You’ll mentor junior engineers, optimize services for performance and cost, and help shape shared foundational systems. Pay / Benefits * Design, develop, and optimize scalable backend services using Java and serverless tech (AWS Lambda) * Design and implement RESTful APIs and event-driven systems * Contribute to frontend components when required * Improve performance and cost-efficiency of existing services * Collaborate with Architects, Product Managers and other engineering leads to deliver solutions * Mentor junior developers and promote best practices * Implement and maintain CI/CD pipelines * Ensure code quality via peer reviews, testing, and standards compliance * Document shared components with guidelines and examples Tasks * 8+ years of backend development experience with Java * Experience with serverless frameworks (AWS Lambda, Google Cloud Functions) * Hands-on frontend experience (React, Web Components) * Strong understanding of distributed systems, scalability, and data modeling * Experience working with cloud technologies and serverless AWS stack (Lambda, DynamoDB, API Gateway, SNS/SQS/EventBridge) * Extensive experience with software development best practices (design patterns, TDD, profiling, debugging) * Experience with CI/CD tools and automation * Effective communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders in Agile environments * Mentorship and willingness to develop junior engineers * Preferred: understanding or experience with AI/ML Key requirements * remote first culture * health care coverage * education reimbursement * competitive PTO * self-care days * parential leave
