Job description
As a Systems Integration Engineer 1 at Illumina, you will work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment to help develop and test genomic analysis tools at the leading edge of research. You will contribute to the delivery of high-quality, robust products through the integration of hardware, software, chemistry, and biological assay components. A key aspect of this role is executing structured experiments, diagnosing complex system-level issues, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to drive problems to root cause., * Perform hands-on integration, testing and troubleshooting of DNA sequencing systems and assay platforms, with a focus on chemical or biochemical assay workflows
- Execute system-level troubleshooting across biochemical assays, hardware, software, and application components
- Investigate technical problems by analyzing data, forming hypotheses, and proposing practical solutions in collaboration with cross-functional colleagues
- Track, log and communicate issues encountered during development using established documentation and issue-tracking processes
- Apply analytical techniques and tools to analyze experimental and system-level data, identify trends, and support data-driven decision making
- Execute design verification plans, collect and review data, and contribute to verification reports
- Author and maintain clear documentation of experimental procedures, protocols, results, deviations, and observations
- Work effectively within cross-functional project teams (research, product development, manufacturing, etc.)
- Present technical findings, risks, and recommendations to engineering and scientific stakeholders
Requirements
- Foundational understanding of, or keen interest to learn sequencing systems, assay platforms, and associated wet laboratory techniques
- Hands-on wet laboratory experience (academic or industry) working with biochemical assays, instrumentation, or complex experimental workflows.
- Broad scientific knowledge across disciplines such as molecular biology, chemistry, software, instrumentation, and data analysis
- Ability to analyze and draw conclusions from large data sets
- Familiarity with AI tools, scientific programming or scripting (e.g., Python) for data analysis is preferred
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively in technical discussions across assay, software, engineering, or manufacturing teams
- Detail-oriented, self-motivated, and collaborative, with the ability to clearly communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary, and evolving research and development environment, * Typically requires 0 to 2 years of relevant professional experience (including internships, co-ops, or academic research)
- Bachelors or Master’s degree in engineering or science discipline (Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biology, or a related field)
- Complex system troubleshooting skills
- Ability to think critically, learn quickly, and adapt to changing priorities and development needs.
- Aptitude for independent research in addition to working well within a team
Strong preference will be given to individuals with intense curiosity about the world around them and demonstrated ability for digging deep into experimental methods and results.
Benefits & conditions
The estimated base salary range for the Systems Integration Engineer 1 role based in the United States of America is: $68,400 - $102,600. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. The range reflects long-term growth in the role; therefore, most candidates are hired between the minimum and middle of the range. Placement depends on experience, skills, location, and internal equity. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
