Job description

Tech Breakdown

  • C/C++, Verilog, and Python
  • FPGA and/or microprocessor architectures, RTOS, and communication protocols (UART, SPI, CANopen, EtherCAT)
  • Embedded development tools: debuggers, emulators, oscilloscopes

Daily Responsibilities

  • Contribute individually and direct a small team (2-4) of firmware engineers to design, develop, test, and maintain firmware for motion control products
  • Manage and mentor the firmware engineering team, oversee control algorithm implementation, and lead testing, debugging, and documentation efforts
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with hardware engineers, software developers, and applications engineers, and participate in code reviews to uphold best practices

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
  • 10+ years of firmware development experience with real-time embedded systems, preferably in the motion control industry
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a small team in developing embedded firmware
  • Proficiency in C/C++, Verilog, and Python
  • Strong understanding of FPGA and/or microprocessor architectures, peripherals, and communication protocols (e.g., UART, SPI, CANopen, EtherCAT)
  • Experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS) and embedded development tools (debuggers, emulators, oscilloscopes)
  • Familiarity with hardware design principles and the ability to read schematics and datasheets
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to convey technical concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Experience with motor control technologies such as brushless DC motors, stepper motors, and servo systems
  • Knowledge of control theory and experience implementing control algorithms for motion control applications
  • Knowledge of Functional Safety requirements, standards, and regulatory requirements related to motion control products

Our client, a leading innovator in motion control products serving the robotics, automation, and aerospace industries, is looking for a full-time Embedded Firmware Engineering Manager to help lead firmware development for its advanced motion control systems. This role combines hands on real time embedded firmware work with leadership of a small team of firmware engineers. This role is 5 days onsite in Canton, MA

This is a great fit for a technical leader who wants to stay close to the code while growing their people management skills. You’ll direct and mentor a small team, set best practices for firmware development and testing, and work cross-functionally with hardware, software, and applications engineers, all while shaping how a growing, innovation-driven company builds the firmware behind its motion control products.
