Job description

A financial services organization is seeking a Data Analyst in Vienna, VA to support a large data governance backlog remediation initiative. This role focuses on SQL-driven analysis, governance documentation, and cross-functional coordination to help make enterprise data more usable, trusted, and well-documented. About the Opportunity:

  • Schedule: Monday through Friday (hybrid, 3 days per week onsite)
  • Setting: Hybrid, * Lead remediation work for a large data governance backlog, including prioritization, status tracking, risk identification, and follow-through on deliverables.
  • Use SQL to analyze tables, validate field logic, and identify data elements and columns for review and documentation.
  • Create and maintain governance artifacts such as data dictionaries, source-to-target mappings, critical data element documentation, metadata, and lineage context.
  • Partner with governance teams, analysts, subject matter experts, and business stakeholders to clarify data definitions and align on deliverables.
  • Prepare progress updates, reporting, and documentation that clearly communicate blockers, dependencies, and next steps.

Requirements

  • Seeking a Data Analyst to support a large data governance backlog remediation initiative.
  • SQL is a must-have - needs to be able to pull tables and identify associated data elements/columns for review and documentation.
  • Strong organization, project management, and reporting skills to manage the inventory, track progress, and provide regular stakeholder updates.
  • Must understand data governance practices and have experience creating governance artifacts such as:

  • Data dictionaries
  • Source-to-target mappings (STTMs)
  • Critical Data Elements (CDEs)
  • Strong teamwork and stakeholder collaboration skills are important - this project cannot be completed in a silo and will require coordination with peers, SMEs, and business partners.
  • Nice to have: Power BI experience, executive-level presentation skills, and experience translating data trends into meaningful business insights.
  • Primary screening focus: SQL + data governance artifacts + organization/project management + ability to work effectively across teams.

Key recruiter takeaway: This is not primarily a BI/dashboard role. Prioritize candidates who can use SQL, understand governance documentation, and effectively manage a large inventory of remediation work. Power BI and data storytelling are secondary., * Advanced SQL skills, including querying large datasets, assessing table structures, and investigating data quality issues.

  • Experience creating or maintaining data governance artifacts such as data dictionaries, source-to-target mappings, critical data element documentation, metadata, or lineage documentation.
  • Experience managing complex workstreams with multiple stakeholders, dependencies, deadlines, and deliverables.
  • Working knowledge of data governance practices, including metadata management, data stewardship, data ownership, and data quality.
  • Working knowledge of data warehousing, database structures, and ETL or ELT processes.
  • Strong stakeholder communication skills with the ability to explain technical findings and documentation needs to technical and business audiences.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, Business Analytics, Data Analytics, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Skills:

  • Power BI experience, including developing dashboards to communicate remediation progress and data readiness.
  • Experience applying data storytelling principles to translate data trends into leadership-ready insights.
  • Experience with Microsoft Purview or similar data catalog and metadata management platforms.
  • Experience supporting enterprise-wide or cross-business-unit data governance or analytics initiatives.
  • Familiarity with semantic models, curated datasets, certified data products, or self-service BI enablement.
  • PMP, Agile certification, or comparable experience managing cross-functional projects or enterprise workstreams.
  • Advanced degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, Business Analytics, Data Analytics, or a related field.
