Job description
The Healthcare IT Applications Support Specialist will serve as a key resource for the maintenance, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of legacy healthcare information systems, specifically VistA environments and MUMPS-based applications. The ideal candidate will ensure high system reliability, efficient incident resolution, and collaborative enhancements in a complex healthcare IT setting.
Core Responsibilities:
- Act as a subject matter expert for VistA applications and MUMPS programming, providing in-depth support and technical guidance.
- Investigate, analyze, and resolve technical issues, incidents, and service requests concerning application functionality, data integrity, configuration, and integration.
- Perform thorough root cause analysis across application code, system data, workflows, interfaces, and server environments.
- Provide advanced (Tier 2 & Tier 3) application support, including the prioritization, escalation, and resolution of complex tickets and incidents.
- Develop detailed defect remediation strategies, anticipating impact on code, data, end users, and system releases.
- Coordinate user testing, validate fixes, support release and deployment planning, and execute post-implementation monitoring.
- Collaborate closely with software engineers, QA analysts, project managers, IT operations, and healthcare stakeholders to ensure comprehensive system support and knowledge transfer.
- Proactively suggest and help implement process improvements for defect prevention, incident monitoring, backlog triage, and cross-training activities.
Requirements
Extensive hands-on experience supporting, maintaining, or modernizing VistA systems or MUMPS-built healthcare applications.
- Deep proficiency in MUMPS programming with a solid understanding of VistA technical architecture, including routines, globals, FileMan, and associated data structures.
- Demonstrated success troubleshooting and resolving critical issues within legacy or essential healthcare systems.
- Experience performing advanced technical support (Tier 2 or 3), managing defect lifecycles, and working within formalized IT support frameworks.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, capable of explaining complex technical details to diverse stakeholders.
Desired Qualifications:
- Background supporting federal, state, or large enterprise healthcare IT systems-Department of Veterans Affairs experience is a strong plus.
- Knowledge of Agile or DevOps/DevSecOps environments, healthcare compliance, and modern software delivery and sustainment practices.
- Experience leveraging system monitoring tools, conducting root cause analysis reports, executing data corrections, or leading modernization projects for established IT environments.
