Job description

Belfast is becoming an increasingly important technology hub, and at ThotSuite Technology Solutions Ltd, we build reliable enterprise software designed to support ambitious organisations. We create scalable platforms that combine strong engineering foundations with practical business value. We are looking for a Principal Software Engineer (m/f/d) who can provide technical leadership across our software engineering organisation. You will work on complex engineering challenges, establish development standards, and help shape the architecture of products used by customers across multiple markets. This is a hands-on technical leadership role where you will influence engineering decisions without moving into executive management.

Why Work With Us?

The Environment: Our Belfast team works from a modern technology workspace close to the city centre, with dedicated collaboration areas and quiet spaces for focused engineering work. We value thoughtful technical discussions, knowledge sharing, and an environment where experienced engineers can do their best work.

Engineering Culture: We believe strong engineering comes from clear standards, practical architecture, automated testing, and continuous improvement. You will have a meaningful role in shaping how our engineering teams design, build, test, and maintain software.

Modern Technology: Our engineering teams work with modern programming languages, cloud infrastructure, APIs, distributed systems, and contemporary frontend technologies. We encourage engineers to evaluate new technologies based on measurable technical and business benefits.

Professional Growth: We support technical development through conferences, professional training, technical communities, and opportunities to work on challenging projects. Principal engineers are encouraged to share knowledge and contribute to engineering standards across the organisation.

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Architecture: Define and evolve scalable software architectures for complex products and services. Evaluate technical approaches and establish patterns that can be adopted across engineering teams.

Hands On Engineering: Remain actively involved in software development, contributing to complex features, critical systems, architectural improvements, and technically challenging projects.

Technical Leadership: Provide guidance to Senior and mid-level engineers through technical mentoring, architecture discussions, and engineering reviews. Help teams make sound technical decisions while maintaining a high standard of implementation.

Engineering Standards: Establish and improve standards for code quality, testing, documentation, observability, security, and software delivery. Promote engineering practices that make systems easier to maintain and scale.

Cross Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Product, Engineering, Operations, Security, and other stakeholders to translate business requirements into practical technical solutions.

Technical Problem Solving: Investigate complex production and architectural issues, identify underlying causes, and develop solutions that improve reliability, performance, and long-term maintainability.

Requirements

Experience: 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including significant experience designing and delivering large-scale or business-critical software systems.

Technical Expertise: Strong knowledge of software architecture, distributed systems, APIs, databases, cloud platforms, automated testing, and modern software development practices.

Programming: Extensive experience with at least one modern programming language such as Java, C#, Python, Go, TypeScript, or JavaScript, with the ability to work across different parts of a technology stack when required.

Architecture: Demonstrated experience making architectural decisions involving scalability, reliability, performance, maintainability, and security.

Leadership: Experience mentoring engineers, leading technical initiatives, conducting design or code reviews, and influencing engineering decisions without relying on formal executive authority.

Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to engineers, product teams, and non technical stakeholders.

Mindset: You are pragmatic and technically curious. You care about engineering quality but understand the importance of delivering practical solutions. You are comfortable challenging existing approaches, investigating difficult problems, and helping teams build software that remains reliable as the organisation grows.
