Job description

Currently the South Dakota State Prison is looking for a Boiler Specialist with assigned tasks. Such as: technical tasks, projects, or a specialty area requiring the incumbent to determine how to do the job, acquire materials, and complete the project with minimal supervision.

Duties of the Boiler Specialist:

  • Will train and onboard new staff.
  • Provide cost estimates of the proposed projects.
  • Inspecting facility and identifying maintenance projects that needs to be complete.
  • Perform skilled building maintenance tasks in the areas of electrical, plumbing, finish carpentry, refrigeration, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, painting, locksmith, and preventive maintenance to provide for the continued, safe, and efficient operation of the facility and associated areas.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on HVAC systems to ensure the continued operation of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment.
  • Repairs steam radiators and air handling units by replacing valves, air lines, controls, thermostats, and circulation pumps.
  • Maintains air conditioning units by adding coolant, cleaning coils, replacing filters, and adjusting controls.
  • Repairs or replaces plumbing lines and fixtures in buildings or facilities to ensure continued, safe, and sanitary operations.
  • Measures, cuts, and installs appropriate pipes, fittings, and valves.
  • Builds or remodels the interior and exterior of buildings to meet the required maintenance needs of the facility and complete work orders.
  • Completes required reports and records to provide or verify costs associated with the completion of tasks and to account for activities.
  • Accounts for equipment, tools, and supplies and verifies their distribution.
  • Completes general maintenance duties to ensure the safe and continued operation of the facility.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Decisions made include specifying the material needed to do the jobs; how to do a job to ensure that design and code criteria are followed; the design of remodeling or construction projects.
  • Decisions referred include the major purchase of equipment; major remodeling projects; when to bring in contractors to complete the project; recommendations regarding staff changes and disciplinary actions; budget adjustments; and changes in policies or procedures.

Working Conditions:

Duties are typically performed within a particular building but may be required to be outside to inspect projects on the exteriors of buildings. The incumbent may be exposed to hazards associated with mechanical rooms, tunnels, in crawl spaces and to asbestos lined areas.

Requirements

  • local state and federal building codes;
  • appropriate installation and repair techniques;
  • electrical and mechanical principles and design;
  • the functions of various HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems;
  • operation of campus building automation system;
  • the principles and practices of the trades supervised;
  • safety measures and occupation hazards of the trades;
  • knowledge of Metasys/Johnson Controls.

Skill to:

  • communicate with other trades, hospital staff, vendors, and contractors;
  • make repairs and troubleshoot systems while maintaining fiscal responsibility;
  • operate computer programs necessary for maintenance operations.

Ability to:

  • establish and maintain effective supervisory relationships;
  • plan and schedule work assignments; to keep records;
  • read, interpret, and work from sketches, blueprints, and specifications;
  • keep thorough and accurate records;
  • deal tactfully and work effectively with others;
  • communicate information clearly and concisely;
  • operate necessary tools of the trade;
  • perform tasks in the trade areas supervised.
