Cabling Engineer

The Structured Cabling Engineer is responsible for the practical execution of IT infrastructure projects across retail and office environments. This role requires a hands-on engineer who can conduct accurate technical site surveys, complete the necessary pre-site documentation, and carry out the physical installation, testing, and commissioning of structured cabling and auxiliary network systems., 1. Site Surveying & Preparation

• Conduct structural and technical site surveys across varied commercial environments.
• Assess comms room readiness, noting cabinet sizing (U space), power availability (PDU/UPS), grounding, and cooling adequacy.
• Perform audits on existing network switch ports to determine capacity, spare ports, and Power over Ethernet (PoE) capabilities.
• Map cable pathways, assessing containment capacity, inter-floor riser access, and aesthetic requirements (e.g., concealing cables above drop ceilings or adhering to specific paint colors).
• Identify locations and mounting requirements for auxiliary devices, including Wireless APs (Corporate and Public), CCTV, Digital Signage, PA systems, and footfall counters.
• Draft visual rack elevation sheets and accurately mark up floor plans with drop locations and routing paths.
• Calculate material take-offs to produce an accurate Bill of Materials (BOM) for cables, containment, and hardware.

1. Installation & Delivery * All remedial works captured and advised on surveys. * Install containment systems as specified (e.g., wire basket trays, underfloor steel conduit). * Pull, route, and terminate copper cabling (e.g., Cat6a U/FTP) and fibre optic backbones (e.g., OM4/OS2, including splicing). * Mount and patch network hardware, ensuring heavy equipment like UPS battery backups is correctly positioned at the bottom of the cabinet for weight distribution. * Execute cable and outlet schedules, strictly following color-coding and machine-labeling standards. * Work within site logistical constraints, which may include out-of-hours (OOH) or night shifts, secure access protocols, and specific loading bay or waste disposal routes.

2. Quality Assurance, Testing, and Compliance * Ensure all installations comply with standard industry regulations, including TIA-568, ISO/IEC 11801, and BS EN 50173/50174. * Perform Fluke DSX testing (e.g., ISO11801 PL2 Class Ea) to verify link performance, recording headroom and pass/fail results. * Address and resolve operational snags, documenting the actions taken on change control sheets. * Compile a comprehensive photo log documenting before/after comms cabinets, containment routes, terminated panels, and mounted auxiliary devices. * Obtain final project sign-off from the client or store manager, ensuring the site is handed back clean, safe, and clear for public trading.

3. Health, Safety & Risk Management * Adhere to approved Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS). * Verify the site’s Asbestos Register before commencing any invasive work. * Safely manage working-at-height requirements, including the operation of scissor lifts where necessary. * Ensure mandatory fire stopping is completed at all structural penetrations. * Implement required retail-specific safety measures, such as erecting public hoarding/barriers and securing Centre Management Permits to Work.

• Hands-On Experience: Demonstrable background in installing structured cabling in live, public-facing retail environments.
• Detail-Oriented: Thorough in completing required schedules, testing logs, and compliance checklists.
• Flexible: Willingness to work varied hours, including nights and weekends, to meet retail trading constraints.Overnight stays are highly likely.
• Professional Conduct: Capable of maintaining a tidy work environment and interacting professionally with Store Managers for daily handovers and final sign-offs.
• IPAF / PASMA: Certification for safe working at heights and scissor lift operation
• Asbestos Awareness: Minimum UKATA-approved certification for safe working and register checking.
• Technical Competence: Proven experience in pulling and terminating copper (Cat5e/Cat6/Cat6a) and fibre handling. CNCI or equivalent. City & Guilds 3668 or equivalent. FIA or FOA or equivalent.
• Testing Proficiency: Competent in using Fluke DSX cable analyzers for standards-based testing.
• Hands-On Experience: Demonstrable background in installing structured cabling in live, public-facing retail environments.
• Detail-Oriented: Thorough in completing required schedules, testing logs, and compliance checklists.
• Flexible: Willingness to work varied hours, including nights and weekends, to meet retail trading constraints. Overnight work is highly likely.
