Systems Administrator

Reliable systems rarely draw attention when they are working properly, but keeping them that way requires constant monitoring, maintenance, security updates, and careful administration behind the scenes.

As a Systems Administrator, you will help maintain the organisation’s servers, user accounts, cloud platforms, devices, and core business applications. You will handle technical issues that go beyond basic helpdesk support, maintain system availability, assist with infrastructure changes, and ensure users have secure access to the tools they need.

The role offers a mix of troubleshooting and planned technical work. You may begin the day reviewing system alerts and access requests, move on to resolving a Microsoft 365 or network issue, and later complete patching, account administration, backup checks, or documentation for an infrastructure change.

Responsibilities

• Administer Windows-based systems, user accounts, devices, and business applications.
• Manage Microsoft 365 services including Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint, and user licensing.
• Create, modify, and disable user accounts and access permissions.
• Maintain Active Directory and Entra ID identities, groups, and security permissions.
• Monitor system performance, availability, storage capacity, and infrastructure alerts.
• Diagnose and resolve server, desktop, network, authentication, and application issues.
• Install operating system updates, security patches, and approved software.
• Monitor backups and perform routine recovery checks.
• Maintain endpoint security tools, antivirus platforms, and device management policies.
• Support workstation and laptop deployment, configuration, and replacement.
• Assist with VPN, Wi-Fi, DNS, DHCP, and basic network troubleshooting.
• Escalate complex infrastructure problems to specialist engineers or external providers.
• Maintain technical documentation covering systems, configurations, procedures, and recovery processes.
• Support infrastructure upgrades, migrations, software rollouts, and technology projects.
• Review system alerts and investigate unusual activity or recurring technical problems.
• Maintain asset records for laptops, desktops, software licences, and other IT equipment.
• Assist with security controls including multi-factor authentication and access reviews.
• Work with technology suppliers and service providers when specialist support is required.

• Previous experience in systems administration, infrastructure support, IT support engineering, or a similar technical position.
• Practical knowledge of Windows desktop and server environments.
• Experience administering Microsoft 365 is preferred.
• Familiarity with Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID.
• Understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPNs, and basic network troubleshooting.
• Experience with endpoint management, patching, or device deployment would be advantageous.
• Familiarity with backup, recovery, and cybersecurity practices.
• Ability to troubleshoot technical problems methodically and document resolutions clearly.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Relevant Microsoft, CompTIA, Cisco, or equivalent technical certification would be beneficial.ecurity roles
