ATMS Coordinator (Fiber WAN)

Plans, designs, installs, and maintains Seminole County’s Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) and Fiber Optic Wide Area Network (WAN). Acts as a liaison on projects including assisting other agencies (elected officials, municipalities. etc.) with design recommendations, configuration, installation, and interoperability of networking equipment. Coordinates with and advises local cities, counties, state, colleges, and other county departments of network needs and upgrades. Maintains AutoCAD drawings of more than 300 roadway miles of fiber optic cable including more than 150 outlying buildings (fire stations, libraries, high schools, and other satellite government offices. Designs, installs, and maintains data networking equipment (switches, routers, hubs, encoders, terminal servers, etc.). Schedules tasks and supervises assigned personnel., Note: These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. Plans, designs, installs, and maintains networking and other equipment associated with Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and the Counties Fiber Optic Wide / Metropolitan Area Network (WAN / MAN).

Supervises and schedules the activities of the fiber optic team.

Coordinates with other agencies to facilitate the maintenance and installation of new WAN connections.

Makes recommendations to planning and budgeting of department’s resources.

Provides hardware information, recommendations, and configurations for all information networks.

Maintains a proactive role understanding and evaluating emerging technologies and County needs.

Provides technical support and guidance to personnel. Acts as a liaison on special projects including assisting other agencies (elected officials, municipalities, etc.) with design recommendations, configuration, installation, and interoperability of equipment.

Manages projects from the design and engineering phase through deployment.

Supervises assigned personnel.

Performs on-call duty for after hour’s emergencies or other standby requirements as necessary.

Documents work accomplished using Maintstar.

Associate’s Degree and (5) years of experience in network system design and maintenance including (5) years experience with traffic signals and ITS equipment or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to learn new technical skills quickly and resolve complex technical problems effectively.

Ability to meet and deal effectively with the public, county staff, and elected officials.

Ability to organize and prioritize managed tasks successfully.

Extensive knowledge of electronics, fiber optics, and network system design.

Extensive knowledge of the operating characteristics, capabilities, and limitations of computer networks.

Knowledge of hardware trouble-shooting and maintenance.

Knowledge of traffic signal and other related ITS equipment. Knowledge of the development, engineering and installation of Local, Wide, and Metropolitan Area Networks.

Considerable knowledge of diagnostic procedures for problem resolution in a network environment.

Ability to recognize, evaluate, diagnose and correct system operating problems, and network operating problems.

Ability to configure and trouble-shoot routers, switches, specialized traffic signal control, and other associated equipment.
