Job description
Role Overview We are seeking a versatile Network Monitoring & Infrastructure Engineer to lead the optimization of an open-source network monitoring environment (LibreNMS) for a regional communications client.
This project centers on converting an existing LibreNMS platform into a high-trust, highly reliable monitoring system by resolving alerting logic gaps, eliminating noise, and improving topology visibility.
While the initial project statement is structured around an 8-week core deliverable (focused on alerting, escalation policies, map creation, and system consolidation), this role carries strong potential to evolve into an ongoing, expanded engagement covering broader network engineering tasks across the client’s infrastructure., * Alerting Design & Escalation: Audit current alert rules, validate underlying device/interface data (e.g., ifSpeed), build role-based notification groups, and design noise-reduction logic (dependencies, delays, and templates).
- Staged Rollouts: Implement new rule sets using a “mute $\rightarrow$ measure $\rightarrow$ enable” approach to ensure rules are quiet and accurate before going live.
- Visibility & Consolidation: Rebuild shared topology maps, create role-based dashboards, integrate Oxidized for automated configuration backups, and assist with consolidating duplicate NMS instances/retiring legacy monitoring tools.
- Client & Team Interaction: Lead structured milestone walkthroughs, present clear audit findings, and collaborate with client leads at defined project checkpoints.
- Adjacent Network Support: Flex into adjacent routing, switching, and network engineering tasks as the engagement expands beyond initial monitoring scope.
Requirements
- LibreNMS Expertise: Hands-on experience building alert rules, notification transports/Operations, dashboards, and custom maps in LibreNMS (or directly comparable open-source platforms like Zabbix, Nagios, or Observium).
- Protocols & Telemetry: Solid foundation in SNMP, device polling, and how monitoring platforms interpret interface states, utilization, and error counters.
- Alerting Hygiene: Demonstrated experience configuring alert dependencies, delays, and escalation logic to prevent alert fatigue.
- General Network Engineering: Solid grasp of core routing/switching fundamentals, transport, or wireless backhaul.
- Independent Execution: Comfortable executing hands-on work against technical specifications with minimal day-to-day oversight.
Bonus / Preferred Skills
- Access & Broadband: Experience with GPON/XGS-PON (e.g., Calix, Adtran) or TR-069 telemetry.
- Routing & Transport: Cisco or Arista platform experience; familiarity with legacy optical transport gear.
- Fixed Wireless & Security: CBRS/Fixed Wireless experience; familiarity with basic network segmentation and administrative MFA rollouts.
- Tooling: Familiarity with Oxidized (config backups), NetBox (IPAM/DCIM), or telecom billing/CRM ticketing integrations (e.g., NISC iVUE).
