Job description
Insight Global is seeking a Golang Software Engineer for a leader in connected hardware and automation technology. This individual will join a small, highly experienced engineering team building the next-generation platform powering connected devices and automation systems. The team is replacing a legacy stack with a modern Go-based architecture that will serve as the foundation for future product releases.
The ideal candidate is a strong Go developer who is comfortable jumping into existing codebases, solving complex bugs, contributing to middleware development, and building scalable APIs using gRPC and Protocol Buffers. This role offers the opportunity to work on a brand-new product initiative, collaborate with senior engineers, and help create a platform that will support multiple hardware environments for years to come. Day-to-Day:
- Develop, maintain, and enhance Go-based middleware services
- Debug and resolve defects across the software communication stack
- Contribute to a new platform replacing a legacy architecture
- Work on middleware that enables portability across multiple hardware platforms
- Build and maintain gRPC APIs and Protocol Buffer contracts
- Develop protocol translation services between legacy and modern systems
- Write automated unit, integration, and conformance tests
- Participate in code reviews and technical discussions
- Collaborate closely with a small team of senior engineers
- Document architecture decisions, API changes, and technical processes
- Support embedded controller applications interacting with real-world hardware
- Ramp up on platform architecture within the first 30-60 days and quickly begin contributing code
Requirements
Must-Haves:

3+ years of hands-on Golang development experience in production environments o Strong experience reviewing, writing, debugging, and maintaining Go code o Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills o Strong understanding of concurrent/networked systems in Go (goroutines, channels, context management)
- Experience with gRPC and Protocol Buffers (schema design, versioning, API contracts)
- Experience working in Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
- CI/CD experience with GitHub Actions or similar tooling
- Ability to work independently in a small, senior-level engineering team
- Excellent written communication and documentation skills
Nice to Have Skills & Experience

- Experience working in Linux or Embedded Linux environments
- Embedded systems experience
- Device communication protocols (RS485, TCP/IP, serial communication, etc.)
- IoT or connected hardware experience
- Protocol translation/bridging experience
- WebSocket experience
- Event-driven architectures
- Home automation or residential equipment automation experience
- Docker experience
- Experience with hardware-adjacent software development
- Exposure to Bluetooth, RF, or other embedded communication standards
