Chair of Medical Data Science

We are seeking a candidate with an outstanding international academic track record in modern subfields of medical data science, whose research should be focused on the development and application of statistical methods for the analysis of complex biomedical data, whilst placing a particular emphasis on translational orientation and close alignment with clinical questions.

The Chair’s research activities will have an expressly close connection to medicine, as demonstrated by relevant scientific publications, including in medical or health-science contexts. Moreover, the Chair will actively contribute to the Institute of Health Sciences (IGW) and play a pivotal role in its development, ensuring its successful launch, academic growth and external recognition. In this capacity, the Chair will contribute significantly to the integration of medical, health-science and data-science perspectives and will strengthen the University’s interdisciplinary profile in health and medicine.

The Chair will offer statistical consultancy to all IGW partners, external collaborators and medical doctoral candidates. This includes the development and application of suitable statistical models, the analysis of complex datasets and advice on study designs and empirical analyses.

The postholder will represent the subject in research and teaching. In teaching, he or she is expected to deliver courses in epidemiology, medical biometry and medical informatics in accordance with the ÄApprO (German licensing regulations for physicians), which are required for the Medizin Niederbayern degree programme within the framework of the MCN. The postholder is also expected to teach courses in the University’s interdisciplinary degree programmes - some of which are taught in English - and contribute to their design and further development.

The successful candidate will be educated to doctoral level and have demonstrated both pedagogical aptitude and academic excellence, whereby the latter is generally established on the basis of the quality of his or her doctoral research and subsequent academic achievements. He or she will, furthermore, possess the German formal postdoctoral habilitation qualification or an equivalent body of academic achievements garnered whilst employed at an institution of higher education - for instance as a juniorprofessor or in a comparable position with a different title (e.g. assistant professor or lecturer), insofar as the duties and qualification profile correspond to those of a juniorprofessor position - or within a suitable qualification programme, such as the Emmy Noether Programme of the German Research Foundation (DFG); the habilitation-equivalent achievements may also have been attained outside the higher education system. In accordance with Art. 60(3) sentence 1 BayHIG, candidates must not be more than 52 years of age at the time of their appointment.

The Institute of Health Sciences (IGW) is a central unit of the University of Passau and a key partner in the Lower-Bavarian Medical Campus (MCN).

Under the leadership of the University of Regensburg, a new medical degree programme is being established as part of the MCN in cooperation with the University of Passau as well as eight hospitals and two universities of applied sciences in Lower Bavaria. As an inter-faculty platform, the IGW draws from the combined expertise of all departments at the University of Passau and integrates technical methods from mathematics and computer science, economic and management-oriented approaches in healthcare, as well as ethical considerations with health-related questions.
