This is a full-time, onsite role at our Bentonville, AR office. This position is not eligible for remote work. Role summary: Walmart is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the development and delivery of scalable platform capabilities, including infrastructure, tooling, and AI/ML frameworks. This role involves driving the full software lifecycle, applying cloud-native architecture principles, and ensuring high-quality system design. The position requires collaboration with cross-functional teams to translate complex requirements into actionable solutions while mentoring engineers and influencing technical decisions. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong technical judgment, adaptability, and a commitment to continuous improvement to support Walmart’s technology goals and operational excellence. About the team: The Health and Wellness Pharmacy group focuses on delivering high-impact software solutions that support critical business needs. The team leads the design, development, and maintenance of large-scale ReactJS web applications, emphasizing architecture, engineering quality, and reliable delivery. Collaborating closely with Product, Design, and Platform teams, they integrate advanced technologies, including generative AI, to enhance system performance and user experience. The group values technical leadership, iterative development, and data-driven decision-making to ensure scalable, maintainable, and accessible software that meets evolving business requirements. What you’ll do: Technical leadership & architecture

  • Define and evolve front-end architecture for complex React applications (SPA/SSR/hybrid).
  • Lead design reviews, propose standards, and ensure consistency across teams and codebases.

Hands-on development

  • Deliver high-quality features in React/TypeScript, setting the bar for code quality and maintainability.
  • Build reusable UI components, design systems, and shared utilities.
  • Drive performance improvements (bundle size, rendering, caching, Core Web Vitals).

Engineering excellence

  • Establish best practices for testing (unit/integration/e2e), code review, CI/CD and release quality.
  • Improve observability for front-end systems (logging, metrics, tracing, RUM).

Cross-team influence

  • Align multiple teams on technical direction, dependencies, and delivery plans.
  • Partner with backend/platform engineers on APIs, contracts, and end-to-end system design.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, with deep focus on modern web development.
  • Expert-level proficiency with React and strong experience with TypeScript.
  • Strong knowledge of browser fundamentals: DOM, events, networking, performance, profiling, and security.
  • Experience designing scalable front-end architectures (state management, routing, data fetching, component patterns).
  • Clear technical communication (RFCs, design docs, architecture diagrams)
  • Experience with Next.js or other SSR/SSG frameworks.
  • Familiarity with state/data tooling such as Redux Toolkit, Zustand, React Query, GraphQL.

Core Technical Skills

  • React, TypeScript, JavaScript (ES6+), HTML5, CSS3 (CSS-in-JS, Tailwind, Sass).
  • Accessibility and frontend security best practices (WCAG, XSS/CSRF mitigation, secure auth/session handling).
  • API integration (REST/GraphQL), contract-driven development
  • Tooling: Node.js, npm/yarn/pnpm, Vite/Webpack, ESLint, Prettier, Outlined below are the required minimum qualifications for this position. If none are listed, there are no minimum qualifications.

Option 1: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 4 years’ experience in software engineering or related area. Option 2: 6 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
