IT and AV Field Technician

This is a hands-on position supporting residential and commercial clients throughout Southeast Michigan and surrounding service areas. Our projects include structured cabling, business networking, surveillance cameras, access control, commercial AV, home theater, television installation, and general technology support.

The ideal candidate has some previous field experience, understands basic networking and low-voltage systems, and is comfortable working directly with customers. You do not need to be an expert in every system we install, but you must be mechanically capable, willing to learn, and able to troubleshoot problems without giving up when an installation becomes challenging.

Responsibilities

Install, terminate, label, test, and troubleshoot Cat5e, Cat6, speaker, and other low-voltage cabling.

Install and service IP cameras, NVRs, video doorbells, and surveillance equipment.

Install wireless access points, network switches, routers, firewalls, and other network equipment.

Perform basic network configuration and troubleshoot internet, Wi-Fi, PoE, IP-addressing, and device-connectivity issues.

Mount televisions, displays, projectors, speakers, soundbars, and related AV equipment.

Install and configure receivers, media devices, distributed audio, home-theater systems, and commercial AV equipment.

Assist with alarm, access-control, intercom, and smart-building installations.

Install equipment racks, patch panels, wall plates, keystone jacks, cable pathways, and equipment-mounting hardware.

Perform clean cable routing through walls, ceilings, basements, attics, crawlspaces, and commercial spaces.

Troubleshoot computers, printers, peripherals, and basic Windows or business-technology issues when required.

Read installation plans, equipment lists, scopes of work, and manufacturer instructions.

Test completed systems and confirm proper operation before leaving the jobsite.

Maintain accurate records of installed equipment, cable runs, device credentials, testing results, and completed work.

Keep jobsites, company vehicles, tools, and work areas organized and professional.

Communicate clearly with customers and explain completed work in an understandable manner.

Identify unexpected site conditions and promptly communicate them to project management.

Travel to different customer locations and occasionally support evening, weekend, or out-of-area projects.

Previous experience in low-voltage installation, structured cabling, IT support, networking, security systems, AV installation, electrical work, or a related technical trade.

Working knowledge of Cat5e/Cat6 termination, RJ45 connectors, keystone jacks, patch panels, and basic cable testing.

Basic understanding of TCP/IP networking, DHCP, Wi-Fi, routers, switches, and Power over Ethernet.

Comfortable using hand tools, drills, fish rods, ladders, testers, and other installation equipment.

Ability to troubleshoot technical and physical installation problems logically.

Ability to safely work on ladders and in attics, basements, crawlspaces, and other confined areas.

Ability to lift and carry televisions, ladders, equipment, and materials as part of a two-person team when appropriate.

Strong attention to detail and commitment to clean, professional installations.

Professional appearance and respectful customer-service skills.

Ability to arrive on time, follow instructions, and work independently when assigned.

Valid driver’s license and a dependable method of transportation.

Willingness to undergo applicable background and driving-record checks.

Preferred Experience

Experience with any of the following is helpful but not required:

IP surveillance cameras and NVR systems

Ubiquiti UniFi, TP-Link Omada, or similar networking platforms

Alarm.com, Qolsys, DSC, Honeywell, or comparable security products

Access-control and intercom systems

Home-theater receivers, projectors, speakers, and distributed audio

Commercial displays, conference-room AV, and digital signage

Fiber-optic cabling and testing

Windows computers, printers, Microsoft 365, and general business IT support

CompTIA A+, Network+, BICSI, AVIXA CTS, manufacturer certifications, or related credentials, * Network installation: 1 year (Required)

Work Environment

This is a field-based position. Work is performed at residential, commercial, retail, office, and construction locations. Daily assignments and working hours may vary depending on customer schedules and project requirements.

Compensation is based on experience, technical ability, reliability, and capacity to complete work independently.
