DATABASE SPECIALIST

Acts as lead application development specialist to direct, oversee, monitor and coordinate the selection, design, development, security, performance and maintenance of Microsoft SQL databases. Assumes responsibility for data that is accessed and updated by Inmate Service applications such as education, recreation and industries in addition to data that is accessed and updated by agency staff., The supplemental job description lists the essential functions of the position and is not intended to include every job duty and responsibility specific to the position. An employee may be required to perform other related duties not listed on the supplemental job description provided that such duties are characteristic of that job title., Oversees, monitors, directs and performs the creation and modification of computer programs, interfaces, and documentation for the creation and maintenance of applications with the primary focus to automate Inmate Services including but not limited to education, recreation and industries areas.

Develops and maintains data marts, cubes, views and complex queries for operations; performs research, analysis and statistical reporting for internal and external business needs.

Audits and evaluates agency adherence to data management policies including validating access and data and identifying and reviewing data anomalies.

Directs personnel in formulating database plans and system solutions to assure functionality, capacity and performance efficiency to allow for daily operations and for research and data analysis.

Develops and administers policy and procedures to ensure data security and data integrity including procedures for backup and recovery.

Identifies, defines, designs, constructs, and modifies software and hardware systems, including integrating new systems with existing databases while maintaining current database structures.

Researches and develops new solutions to existing problems or new requirements relating to the network, including interfacing with a variety of internal and external customers to identify data requirements and provide data for operational needs.

Implements software and processes to monitor user access and provide alerts for security issues. Provides logs for access and data changes to legal counsel and investigation staff for investigation and litigation purposes.

Continually reviews utilization of hardware and software for forecasting changes that will take place in any and all aspects of the database and information retrieval needs of the agency, providing short and long-term capacity planning allowing the agency adequate lead time to secure funding and to plan and implement needed changes.

YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS: Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education., Education/Experience: Equivalent combination of 10 years of education and experience after completion of high school. Education and experience must be in computer science, computer programming, systems analysis, or a related field, with at least 3 years in systems analysis associated with late generation medium or large scale on-line computer systems or computer networks.
