Network Engineer

Our client is looking for a capable and hands-on Network Engineer to join a small, expert Network team supporting and evolving a highly resilient, low-latency trading environment.

This is a varied role covering network and security infrastructure, cloud environments, data centres and on-premises systems. You’ll play an important part in keeping critical infrastructure secure, reliable and performing at its best, while also contributing to strategic projects and continual improvements.

The successful candidate will be a strong network problem solver who enjoys working in a fast-paced financial environment. You’ll take ownership of client onboarding and connectivity, investigate complex incidents, support live exchange platforms and work closely with internal teams and external service providers.

As your experience develops, there will be opportunities to take increasing ownership of project-based network and security initiatives., * Perform daily operational checks across the Network and Security infrastructure, identifying and investigating faults and anomalies.

• Troubleshoot complex network and security issues using monitoring tools, logs and packet captures to establish root cause.
• Manage client onboarding, access requests and decommissioning requirements.
• Liaise with telecommunications and network service providers to resolve leased-line, circuit and connectivity issues.
• Support and implement planned network and security changes, including validation and post-change checks.
• Monitor infrastructure capacity and contribute to future capacity planning.
• Monitor and support live exchange platforms during operational hours.
• Create and maintain accurate, high-quality network and security documentation, including diagrams and operational procedures.
• Participate in incident investigation and root-cause analysis, escalating issues appropriately.
• Support internal teams with network and security requirements.
• Contribute to network and security projects, taking increasing responsibility as your experience develops.
• Participate in a 06:30-18:30 shift rota, with occasional weekend and Bank Holiday work.
• Attend West and East London data centres occasionally as required.

Essential Skills & Experience - (Financial Services, FinTech, Trading, Low Latency)

• 4+ years’ experience in a Network and Security support engineering role, ideally within a financial services or similarly fast-paced environment.
• CCNP, ACE-P or equivalent hands-on networking experience.
• Experience working with telecommunications providers and leased-line services.

• Strong understanding of:

• TCP/IP
• Routing
• Spanning Tree / RSTP
• Firewalls
• OSPF
• BGP

Hands-on experience supporting and configuring RSTP, OSPF and BGP.

Experience supporting and configuring firewall clusters and centralised firewall management platforms.

Fortinet experience would be advantageous.

Strong network monitoring and troubleshooting skills, including experience with:

• Wireshark
• TCPdump
• Syslog
• SolarWinds or equivalent monitoring platforms
• Firewall logging and traffic analysis

Proven ability to investigate network issues methodically, correlate information from monitoring, logs and packet captures, and identify probable root cause.

Experience configuring and troubleshooting IPsec site-to-site and remote-access VPNs.

Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain technical issues clearly and pragmatically.

Experience maintaining network documentation, including network diagrams and operational procedures.

A willingness to learn and adopt new technologies.

Desirable Skills & Experience - (Financial Services, FinTech, Trading, Low Latency)

Experience with any of the following would be advantageous:

• PTP (Precision Time Protocol)
• Multicast, PIM and Rendezvous Points (RPs)
• AWS networking
• Arista EOS
• Fortinet
• Network automation and scripting, particularly Ansible and Python
• Experience within a low-latency trading or financial markets environment
