Job description

The Design Engineer is a key technical role within the Projects Department, responsible for the design and coordination of stage engineering and drapery solutions for installation in a wide variety of venues around the world, from school auditoriums to world-class arenas.

The role will produce detailed engineering drawings and technical documentation, coordinate design information with internal and external stakeholders, and support Project Managers and installation teams throughout project delivery. The post holder will ensure designs are practical, accurate and developed with safety, quality, relevant standards and project constraints in mind.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer early in their career to develop technical and project engineering skills within a specialist industry. Training and support will be provided to develop knowledge of stage engineering, relevant standards and J&C Joel products and systems., Engineering Design and Drawings

  • Produce detailed general arrangement (GA) and shop drawings to facilitate the installation of standard and bespoke stage machinery within theatres, arenas and other performance venues around the world.
  • Design parts and produce manufacturing drawings for processes including sheet metal manufacture, fabrication, laser cutting, welding, machining, milling and turning.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate engineering documentation, including bills of materials, assembly instructions and engineering specifications.
  • Perform quality checks on design drawings and documentation to ensure accuracy, consistency and adherence to required standards.
  • Design with safety in mind for both the end user and installation teams, within the context of relevant British Standards, industry standards and best practice.

Design Coordination and Project Support

  • Work closely with engineers, architects and other specifiers to understand design requirements, clarify technical details and ensure the feasibility of proposed designs.
  • Coordinate design information between the J&C Joel project team and other contractors, with appropriate follow-up to ensure technical approvals are obtained in line with the project programme.
  • Use online project portals such as A-Site, BIM 360 and Aconex to manage technical submissions, documentation and approvals.
  • Work with Project Managers and installation teams to resolve engineering matters arising on site.
  • Support the wider design team in the delivery of projects worldwide, including collaboration with colleagues working remotely and across different time zones.

Product and Continuous Improvement

  • Contribute to the product development process by identifying opportunities for design improvements, cost reductions and performance enhancements.
  • Contribute to ongoing improvements within the Projects Department and the wider company.

Requirements

Essential:

  • Experience in an engineering, construction or related technical environment.
  • Experience using SolidWorks or a similar 3D design package.
  • Experience using AutoCAD.
  • Experience producing accurate engineering or technical drawings.
  • Ability to work to deadlines and manage several projects or design tasks simultaneously.

Desirable:

  • A diploma or bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field.
  • Understanding of construction drawing practices and standards, with experience within the construction industry.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems or control automation; the primary focus of the role is mechanical engineering.
  • Experience using Revit.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Keen attention to detail, with precision and accuracy in engineering drawings and technical documentation.
  • Strong problem-solving ability, with the confidence to resolve design issues and propose practical solutions.
  • A motivated and forward-thinking approach, with commercial awareness and the ability to identify the best design option within project constraints.
  • The ability to represent J&C Joel professionally in meetings with external stakeholders and other contractors, including design reviews.
  • A strong team mentality, with the ability to take ownership of individual tasks and workload.
  • The ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues working remotely and across different time zones.
  • A proactive approach to continuous improvement and developing technical knowledge.

SYSTEMS AND TECHNICAL SKILLS:

The role involves regular use of engineering design software and project collaboration systems, including:

  • SolidWorks or similar 3D design software.
  • AutoCAD.
  • Online project portals such as A-Site, BIM 360 and Aconex.
  • Revit, where applicable.
