Job description

LearningCog is a leadership, management and sales training and development consultancy. We work closely with organisations to create practical learning solutions that improve individual, team and business performance.

Technology is an important part of how we deliver and develop those solutions. As Junior Software Developer, you will support the continued development, testing and improvement of LearningCog’s digital products and internal technology platforms.

Working with the Software Developer and the wider LearningCog team, you will contribute to real projects while receiving guidance, feedback and practical experience. As your skills and confidence grow, you will take ownership of increasingly complex work.

This is an early-career role. It is suitable for a recent graduate or for someone who has developed equivalent skills through a placement, internship, bootcamp, employment, freelance work or personal projects., * Contribute to the development, testing and maintenance of LearningCog’s technology platforms.

  • Build and improve accessible, responsive web interfaces.
  • Test new features, user journeys and system updates before release.
  • Identify, investigate and clearly document bugs and technical issues.
  • Support backend development tasks under guidance, with responsibility increasing over time.
  • Write clean, readable and maintainable code appropriate to the task.
  • Use GitHub and GitHub Projects to manage assigned work, update progress and raise blockers.
  • Record fixes, setup instructions, testing steps and other useful technical guidance.
  • Take part in regular check-ins, code reviews and project discussions.
  • Work constructively with technical and non-technical colleagues to understand requirements.
  • Learn and apply effective development, testing, security and documentation practices.
  • Manage clearly defined tasks across multiple projects, asking for support when needed.
  • Reports to: Software Developer (day-to-day); Managing Director (overall accountability)

Development and support

LearningCog will support the successful candidate through:

  • Day-to-day guidance from the Software Developer.
  • Regular check-ins, feedback and constructive code review.
  • Practical experience across frontend development, backend development and testing.
  • Clear objectives and progressively more challenging work as capability develops.

Requirements

Candidates should be able to demonstrate:

  • Some practical software or web development experience gained through study, a placement, employment, a bootcamp, freelance work or personal projects.
  • Foundational knowledge of HTML and CSS.
  • Foundational programming ability in JavaScript, Python or a comparable language.
  • An understanding of how frontend and backend components work together in a web application.
  • A logical approach to problem-solving, testing and investigating errors.
  • A passion for writing clear, readable and maintainable code.
  • Clear verbal and written communication, including the ability to explain progress and blockers.
  • A willingness to ask questions, receive feedback and continue learning.
  • An organised, collaborative and dependable approach to assigned work.

Desirable criteria

  • React or another modern frontend framework.
  • Python/Django.
  • Git or GitHub.
  • REST APIs and integrating frontend and backend systems.
  • Relational databases or data modelling.
  • Content management systems.
  • AWS or another cloud platform.
  • Web accessibility, automated testing or software security fundamentals.

  • Selection will assess potential, foundational skills and approach to problem-solving, not only previous commercial experience.
