Job description
Seeking an Embedded Firmware Engineer to join our growing autonomy team and help scale autonomous solutions across mining and industrial vehicle platforms. You’ll work at the intersection of firmware, embedded systems, vehicle communications, and safety-critical controls, developing the software that enables autonomous systems to communicate with and control real-world equipment.
This role is ideal for engineers who enjoy working close to the hardware, solving complex debugging challenges, and building reliable embedded software in demanding environments. You’ll collaborate closely with electrical, systems, autonomy, and vehicle integration teams to bring new capabilities from concept to deployment.
- Develop and maintain embedded firmware in C for microcontroller-based systems operating in real-world vehicle environments * Build firmware for custom hardware platforms from schematic review through deployment * Integrate sensors, actuators, vehicle interfaces, and communication systems into autonomous vehicle platforms * Design and implement firmware supporting drive-by-wire vehicle control systems * Work with vehicle communication protocols including CAN and related automotive networking technologies * Debug complex firmware, hardware, and system-level issues using oscilloscopes, analyzers, and other diagnostic tools * Read and interpret electrical schematics to understand system architecture and bring up new hardware platforms * Investigate and resolve communication, performance, and integration issues across embedded systems * Develop software running on bare-metal and real-time operating system (RTOS) environments * Collaborate with autonomy, perception, controls, and electrical engineering teams to deliver robust vehicle functionality * Support field testing and deployment activities as autonomous systems are integrated into customer vehicles
Requirements
- BS or MS in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field * 5+ years of experience developing embedded firmware for production systems * Strong proficiency in C programming * Experience with embedded microcontrollers and low-level firmware development * Experience working in RTOS and/or bare-metal environments * Strong understanding of common embedded communication protocols: * CAN * SPI * I2C * UART * Ethernet * Ability to read and understand electrical schematics * Strong debugging and root-cause analysis skills across firmware, embedded hardware, and system integration issues * Experience bringing up new hardware systems and troubleshooting communication interfaces * Understanding of digital electronics and embedded hardware fundamentals * Strong collaboration skills and ability to work effectively in a highly cross-functional team environment * Experience with autonomous vehicles, off-road vehicles, automotive systems, robotics, mining equipment, or industrial automation * Experience with CAN-based vehicle networks and protocols such as: * J1939 * CAN diagnostics (UDS) * CANopen * Automotive Ethernet or Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) experience * Experience with STM32 or similar microcontroller platforms * Familiarity with safety-critical systems and standards such as ISO 26262 * Experience implementing or supporting drive-by-wire systems * Experience reverse engineering or integrating with third-party vehicle systems * Python scripting or tooling experience * Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools (ChatGPT, Claude, Codex, GitHub Copilot, etc.)
