Job description

We’re looking for a highly experienced Lead Software Developer to take ownership of a team of engineers while remaining close to the technology and delivery of business-critical systems.

This position is ideal for a Principal Developer, Lead Developer or Technical Lead who enjoys mentoring and guiding teams but still wants to be involved in technical decision-making, architecture, code quality and engineering best practice. You’ll act as the bridge between development teams and leadership, providing technical direction while helping create a high-performing engineering culture.

The organisation has a strong heritage in the Microsoft .NET ecosystem and is currently investing heavily in cloud technologies and modern engineering practices, with increasing adoption of Java-based solutions. As a result, this role offers the opportunity to help shape the future technology direction while remaining hands-on enough to influence how solutions are designed and delivered.

The Role

Working closely with both developers and senior stakeholders, you’ll help drive technical excellence across the software function. You’ll mentor engineers, support their professional development and ensure the team adheres to modern engineering standards and best practices.

You’ll play a key role in improving development processes, identifying opportunities for greater efficiency and helping establish a consistent approach to software delivery. While this isn’t a pure people management role, you’ll be expected to provide technical leadership, support performance conversations and help guide the growth of the team.

Alongside your leadership responsibilities, you’ll remain involved in solution design, architecture discussions, code reviews and technical decision-making, helping the team deliver high-quality, scalable software solutions.

Requirements

We’re keen to speak with experienced Lead Developers, Principal Developers, Technical Leads and Senior Engineers who have experience mentoring development teams and influencing technical direction.

You’ll ideally bring:

  • A strong software engineering background, ideally within .NET/C#
  • Experience leading or mentoring development teams
  • Strong understanding of software architecture and design principles
  • Experience driving engineering standards and best practices
  • Cloud experience, ideally Azure
  • Exposure to Java or an interest in modern technology stacks
  • Experience with Agile delivery environments
  • Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills

Desirable Experience

  • Experience guiding teams through technology transformation initiatives
  • Exposure to cloud-native architecture and platform modernisation
  • Experience influencing engineering strategy across multiple teams
  • Previous responsibility for technical roadmaps or architectural governance, This is an excellent opportunity for a senior technical professional who enjoys leading developers, improving engineering practices and influencing technology strategy, whilst maintaining a strong connection to the technical side of software development.

Benefits & conditions

Salary: £75,000 + £6,000 Car Allowance On-Call: 1 in 6 rota, paying approximately £450 per week when on-call, * Salary up to £75,000

  • £6,000 Car Allowance
  • On-call allowance of approximately £450 per week when participating in the rota
  • Hybrid working with 3 days per week in Doncaster
  • The opportunity to shape technical direction and engineering standards
  • Genuine influence over tooling, practices and architecture
  • A role that balances leadership with hands-on technical involvement
  • Career progression towards Engineering Manager, Head of Development or Architecture leadership positions
