Job description
You’ll be our first in-house engineer and our IT department. Most of your time goes to building. You’ll sit with our coordinators, watch what they click, and turn the repetitive parts of their day into software that does the work for them: timesheets, payroll prep, hotels, onboarding and certifications. The rest of your time goes to keeping the office team’s accounts, email and devices secure and working.
What you’ll do
- Own and extend our employee portal (Next.js / TypeScript on Vercel) and the systems behind it: Airtable, Redis, Twilio texting, QuickBooks Online, Google Workspace and OneDrive.
- Find the biggest time sinks in operations and automate them. Success means each coordinator can support more field employees.
- Use AI coding tools every day (we use Claude Code), and review what they produce carefully. These systems pay people and run on live data.
- Run company IT: Google Workspace admin, 2-step verification for everyone, DNS and email authentication, laptop and phone setup, and access when people join and leave.
- Keep systems backed up and documented, so the next engineer isn’t starting from zero.
Requirements
- 3+ years building and shipping production web apps (TypeScript, React or Next.js preferred)
- Hands-on experience with APIs and integrations (REST, OAuth, webhooks)
- Real experience with AI coding assistants (Claude Code, Cursor or similar)
- Enough IT admin experience to run Google Workspace and lock down a small company
- Care with live systems: you test before you ship and can roll back cleanly
- Clear, plain-English communication with field supervisors, payroll and office staff
Benefits & conditions
Nice to have: Airtable, QuickBooks Online API, Twillo, Claude Code.
What you get
- $90,000-$120,000 base, depending on experience
- A direct line to the president. What you build changes how the company runs within weeks, not quarters.
Pay: $90,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
About the company
Alpha Labor Co. supplies crews for pre-engineered metal building (PEMB) construction: erectors, insulated metal panel installers, roofers and foremen on job sites across the country. A small office team keeps hundreds of field employees working, paid, housed and certified. We built our own employee portal to do it, and we need someone to own it.
