Job description

As a Principal Mechanical Architect - LiquidStack Cooling Solutions at Trane Technologies, you will work as the lead electrical engineer dedicated exclusively to our LiquidStack product portfolio. You will serve as a senior member of a high-performing product development team, leading the electrical design and development of coolant distribution units (CDU) and advanced thermal management solutions for the rapidly growing data center market. This position offers the opportunity to guide projects from early concept and feasibility through prototype, production, and sustaining, while delivering durable, cost-effective, and high-performing solutions. You will apply deep expertise in power architecture, motor control, high and low voltage components, regulatory standards, manufacturing methods, and engineering analysis to solve complex technical challenges and ensure product quality, reliability, and compliance. Working across cross-functional teams, you will provide technical leadership, drive continuous improvement, and support innovative product enhancements that advance sustainability goals.

What you will do:

  • Own the electrical distribution architecture for new skidded and modular coolant distribution unit (CDU) platforms and data center thermal management solutions.

  • Design electrical systems featuring dual power, redundancy, safety interlocks, and advanced control systems.

  • Design and select Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), motor controls, instrumentation, and telemetry for physical parameters (flow rate, pressure, temperature).

  • Establish CAD and drawing standards, bill of materials conventions, and design-review practices.

  • Lead electrical designs from concept through release to manufacturing, performing critical calculations (short circuit ratings, voltage drop, wire sizing, thermal loading).

  • Partner with global teams, including Hong Kong engineering, to integrate sensors, fail-safe devices, automation solutions, and validation methods (DFMEA).

  • Electrical design and component integration using GD&T, CAD, prints, specifications, DFMEA, and validation methods.

  • Work with electrical, PLM, FEA, controls, and systems engineers to integrate electrical components, sensors, fail safe devices, redundancy, and automation solutions.

  • Work with test personnel to validate and test products.

  • Understand and apply industry standards UL 508A, NFPA 79, National Electric Code, IBC/IMC, UL/CSA, CE, OSHA, and Open Compute Project to products.

  • Partner with global teams and the Hong Kong engineering team on global design activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering; 10+ years industrial electrical design or power equipment engineering experience

  • Experience working through the full product lifecycle for new product development (Concept design to detailed design to design validation to commercialization)

  • Deep design and selection experience with VFD’s, high/low voltage components, wiring layouts and harmonic distortion mitigation

  • Experience in HVAC, industrial equipment, datacenters or a manufacturing environment.

  • Quality and customer service focus.

  • Proficiency in CAD software such as PTC Creo, Creo Schematic, ePlan Pro Panel, SolidWorks, or similar design platforms.

  • Strong understanding of design for manufacturability/ serviceability, tolerance analysis, engineering change management, and PLM, ERP, or document control systems.

  • Knowledge of appropriate product safety and design standards; UL508A, National Electric Code, IBC/IMC, UL/CSA, CE, OSHA, and Open Compute Project
