Job description

The IT Systems Architect (Integration Lead) serves as a key technical leader for the program, designing and guiding the platforms that enable secure, scalable, and high performing data exchange across VA related systems. In this role, you will shape enterprise integration patterns, modernize mission critical workflows, and ensure real time data accuracy across distributed environments.

You will architect solutions that support high volume exam processing, secure record movement, and seamless interoperability between internal and external systems. This position offers the opportunity to influence enterprise architecture direction, collaborate across technical and business teams, and drive modernization within a meaningful mission space.

This role is based in our Fairfax, VA or Lafayette, LA office, with a hybrid work model available.

Your future duties and responsibilities

  • Architect and enhance the Exam Management System (EMS) platform, including portals, workflow modules, and large scale exam processing capabilities

  • Lead the design and development of APIs, event driven integrations, and standards based data exchange patterns (training will be provided on VA specific standards and workflows)

  • Oversee and optimize data interoperability across EMS and other enterprise systems, ensuring accuracy, reliability, and secure information flow

  • Direct DevSecOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines, release coordination, continuous testing, and user acceptance testing

  • Support and enhance Provider, VA, and Claimant Portals through secure role based access, identity management, and end to end user workflow continuity

  • Implement secure architecture practices including audit logging, MFA, encryption, and structured workflow controls

  • Guide cloud infrastructure strategy to deliver scalable, resilient, and event driven architectures

  • Ensure security compliance and lead secure by design initiatives related to sensitive data protection, logging, and integrity management

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field

  • 8-10 years of experience in systems architecture, integration engineering, or senior software engineering with increasing architectural responsibility

  • Experience designing or delivering distributed systems or enterprise integrations

  • Cloud architecture experience (AWS, Azure, or equivalent). AWS Solutions Architect certification is preferred, but not required

  • Hands on experience designing or integrating APIs and working with structured data formats such as JSON, XML, or other interoperability standards

  • Experience delivering solutions in regulated, secure, or enterprise environments (commercial, federal, healthcare, or financial)

  • Strong understanding of event driven architecture, integration patterns, secure design principles, and modern application frameworks

Desired qualifications / non essential skills

  • Experience working within a DevSecOps or scaled agile environment (SAFe experience is a plus)

  • Exposure to healthcare interoperability concepts, government systems, or highly regulated data workflows (not required; training provided)

  • Background in microservices, event driven systems, or modernization of legacy integrations

  • Familiarity with identity and access management (IAM), zero trust approaches, or secure portal architecture
