Job description

Our client is seeking an experienced IBMi (AS/400) Systems Engineer/Administrator to support, maintain, and enhance their enterprise IBMi environment. This role is responsible for day-to-day system operations, hardware and software maintenance, performance monitoring, troubleshooting, and on-call support as needed. The ideal candidate will have strong technical expertise in IBMi systems and a proactive approach to reliability, security, and operational excellence. Team Culture/ Work Environment:

Key Projects:

  • Picking up the extra work, * Daily Operations & Maintenance

o Monitor and maintain IBMi (OS/400, i5/OS) systems to ensure optimal performance and uptime. o Perform system health checks, job monitoring, subsystem management, and system message handling. o Apply PTFs, firmware updates, and OS upgrades in coordination with change management processes. o Manage user profiles, system security, and resource allocation. o Perform routine storage, tape, and backup/restore operations.

  • System Support & Troubleshooting

o Diagnose and resolve issues related to IBMi hardware, OS, and system components. o Analyze system logs, performance data, and job errors to identify root causes. o Coordinate with hardware vendors for repair, replacement, and preventative maintenance.

  • Backup & Recovery

o Support and enhance backup, archival, and disaster recovery processes. o Work with established tools (e.g., TSM, Cohesity) to improve data protection strategies.

Requirements

  • Strong analytical and problem solving abilities.
  • Effective communication skills with technical and non technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within an operations team.
  • Flexibility and willingness to provide after-hours support during critical incidents or maintenance windows. *

Technology Requirements:

  • Strong knowledge of OS/400, CL commands, system administration, and hardware maintenance.
  • Experience with system operations including job scheduling, BRMS or backup utilities, and system monitoring.
  • Understanding of IBMi security, user provisioning, authority management, and auditing.
  • Ability to troubleshoot system, job, performance, and operational issues independently.

  • 3-5+ years of experience supporting IBMi / AS/400 / iSeries environments.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Experience with Cohesity, TSM (Tivoli Storage Manager), or other enterprise backup solutions.
  • Exposure to enterprise storage systems (SAN/NAS, IBM Power storage, etc.).
  • Knowledge of ACBS (Advanced Commercial Banking System) - significant plus.
  • Familiarity with HA/DR solutions like PowerHA, MIMIX, or Robot HA.
  • Experience with automation tools such as Robot Schedule, HelpSystems, or similar.
  • Knowledge of network concepts related to IBMi (TCP/IP, FTP, ODBC, etc.).
