3d Models Computer-Aided Design SolidWorks (CAD) Reverse Engineering

Job description

We are working with a well-established engineering business specialising in the design and build of special purpose machinery and automation systems. Due to continued growth, they are looking to appoint a Mechanical Design Engineer to join their design team.

This is a varied, hands-on role covering the full design lifecycle, from reverse engineering existing components through to developing new machinery, jigs, fixtures, and automation solutions. The Role

  • Measure, interpret, and reverse-engineer existing (and sometimes damaged) machine parts and assemblies
  • Create accurate 3D models using SolidWorks
  • Carry out occasional customer site visits for measurements and technical assessments
  • Maintain standard parts within CAD and MRP systems
  • Raise purchase orders for materials and components
  • Design special purpose jigs, fixtures, machine automation, and mechanical components
  • Produce BOMs and maintain accurate project documentation through to completion
  • Support manufacturing, build, and commissioning activities

Requirements

  • Engineering qualification (Apprenticeship, HNC/HND, or Degree)
  • Strong experience using SolidWorks / 3D CAD
  • Confident working from legacy 2D drawings and limited briefs
  • Background in mechanical design within machinery, automation, or manufacturing
  • Understanding of Design for Manufacture (DFM) and Lean principles
  • Basic materials knowledge (steels essential; copper/alloys advantageous)
  • Strong attention to detail with good organisational skills

Desirable Experience

  • Special purpose machinery, automation, or fixturing
  • Sheet metal and welded fabrication design
  • Working within manufacturing or quality-driven environments
  • Hands-on, practical engineering approach

Benefits & conditions

  • Early Friday finish (2pm)
  • Opportunity to work on full lifecycle engineering projects
  • Varied and technically interesting design work
  • Growing and stable engineering environment
