Job description

DeepJudge is seeking a Machine Learning Engineer to design, build, evaluate and refine AI systems that power our core products. In this role, you will have a chance to own the entire lifecycle of an ML-enabled component of our product from research to production: data analysis, modeling, implementation, delivery to the customers, offline / online evaluation, and iterative improvement.Your responsibilities will include:

  • Bridge Research and Production: Stay on top of the latest developments in the AI space and translate cutting-edge research into scalable, production-ready systems.
  • Core ML: Train, evaluate, and optimize a wide range of machine learning systems. Drive efficient inference and deployment while ensuring the robustness, reliability, and scalability of ML-powered components across our product.
  • Search: Continuously advance search quality through innovative use of models, data, tools, both offline and online techniques, and any other means that move performance forward.
  • Workflows: Shape the next generation of agentic workflows that empower legal professionals to automate everyday work through intelligent search, LLMs, and specialized ML-powered tools. Develop and improve the core components of our workflow engine, evaluate performance at scale, and lead data-driven improvements across a rich ecosystem of custom legal workflows.

Requirements

  • Have a strong hands-on experience, including training and serving deep learning models.
  • Are proficient in at least one modern deep learning framework (e.g. PyTorch, JAX, TensorFlow).
  • Are familiar with modern ML practices, and have experience building scalable AI-powered systems that deliver real value. Experience with neural retrieval systems, agentic systems, or publications in top journals/conferences is a strong plus.
  • Take ownership of key product components, define their technical vision, and navigate the uncertainty of building first-of-its-kind AI models.
  • Thrive in ambiguous environments, executing with focus while collaborating effectively across engineering and business teams.
  • Are passionate about solving complex problems and pushing the boundaries of AI, turning cutting-edge ML ideas into impactful, production-ready features.
  • Last but not least, if you have excellent collaboration and communication skills that allow you to share your ideas and incorporate others' ideas effectively.

Benefits & conditions

  • Location: We have an office near Zurich central station and mostly work on-premise
  • You will be able to take on full ownership for your projects and tasks from day 1
  • You will have a stake in shaping the future of a high-impact scale-up
  • You will be on a fast-paced learning path, where you grow professionally every day, combining diverse areas of ML and SE expertise to develop and deploy cutting-edge ML solutions

This would NOT be the right role for you if you:

  • Want a lot of clarity and direction about what to do and how to do it
  • Prefer to focus solely on research and avoid integrating the ML features you built into the product.
  • Want to work remotely and don't like collaborating in person

About the company

DeepJudge is Switzerland's leading AI and ICT scale-up, transforming how law firms and legal departments access and leverage their knowledge. Founded by former Google search engineers with PhDs in AI from ETH Zurich, and backed by top-tier Silicon Valley investors, we are building the intelligence layer that powers the legal industry. Every firm can license the same AI models, but no two firms share the same institutional knowledge. Decades of experience, work product, and precedent are often trapped across systems, underused and inaccessible. DeepJudge makes this expertise instantly available through world-class enterprise search and AI infrastructure, enabling firms to automate workflows, build knowledge-powered applications, and turn experience into a lasting advantage. Our technology is trusted by many of the world's leading law firms, including Freshfields, Gunderson Dettmer, Holland & Knight, Arent Fox, and Cozen O'Connor. Headquartered in Switzerland with a growing team across North America, we are expanding rapidly and shaping the future of how professional knowledge is discovered and applied. At DeepJudge, we move fast, think rigorously, and care deeply about what we build. We combine cutting-edge research with close collaboration with our clients to deliver solutions that truly make an impact. If you want to be part of a team defining how AI transforms high-stakes knowledge work, this is the place to do it.
