Engineering Lead for AI & Automation

As the Engineering Lead for AI & Automation, you will take a pioneering role in defining how our company harnesses automation and artificial intelligence. You'll build and lead a new engineering function from the ground up - driving end-to-end automation initiatives through a combination of proven technologies and emerging AI- and agent-based solutions. Collaborating closely with teams across the organization, you'll design and deliver systems that enhance efficiency, unlock innovation, and enable smarter ways of working., People Leadership

• Build and scale a high-performing team of engineers and AI specialists focused on automation and intelligent systems.
• Define team structure, roles, and hiring strategy to support long-term growth.
• Recruit, onboard, and retain top engineering talent.
• Conduct regular 1:1s, give constructive feedback, and mentor team members for professional growth.
• Cultivate a diverse, collaborative, and inclusive team culture.

Technical & Project Leadership

• Identify and prioritize automation opportunities across business operations and engineering workflows.
• Evaluate, select, and integrate the latest AI and automation tools to maintain a strong technological edge.
• Design and implement scalable automation systems using RPA, workflow orchestration, and LLM-driven agent architectures.
• Ensure technical excellence through code reviews, documentation, testing, and thoughtful design discussions.
• Lead project delivery through clear planning, prioritization, and communication with stakeholders.
• Partner with business, operations, and engineering teams to embed automation within existing processes and platforms.

• 5+ years of experience in software engineering, including at least 2-3 years in a leadership role.
• Strong technical foundation in software development, process automation, and applied AI/ML.
• Hands-on experience with automation technologies (e.g., RPA platforms, workflow orchestration) and modern AI systems (e.g., LLMs, agent frameworks).
• Proficient in Python, with the ability to prototype and deliver production-quality automation or AI solutions.
• Proven leadership and communication skills with the ability to inspire, align, and grow engineering teams.
• Experience managing projects, prioritizing effectively, and delivering high-quality results in agile environments.
• Track record of evaluating and integrating third-party automation or AI tools.
• Fluent in English; German language skills are a plus.
• Valid work permit for Germany or the EU.
• Entrepreneurial mindset - ideally with experience in a startup, research, or innovation-focused environment.
• Deep passion for transforming the way people work through AI and automation.
