Job description

Postdoctoral Reseacher (m/f/x): hardware development and integration for the LHCb experiment, 39,83 hrs/week

The LHCb experiment at CERN focuses on precision studies of heavy-flavour physics and hadron spectroscopy. As part of its Upgrade II program for operation at the High-Luminosity LHC, LHCb is developing the Mighty Tracker, a new downstream tracking detector that combines an inner pixel region with an outer scintillating-fibre (SciFi) tracker. The fibre tracker will employ long, radiation-hard fibre mats read out by silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) and a new generation of front-end electronics based on the PACIFIC++ ASIC, providing precise timing and amplitude information at high rates. The project involves extensive hardware, electronics, and system-integration development, including fibre module production, cold-box mechanics, SiPM and ASIC characterization, and DAQ interface testing - areas, among which Ruhr University Bochum will play a leading role.

Your task involves close collaboration with partner institutes in Dortmund, Aachen, Freiburg, and Heidelberg (Germany), as well as EPFL (Switzerland) and ICCUB (Spain) within the LHCb Mighty Tracker project. You will work in an active, international research environment with opportunities for teaching, supervising students, and contributing to detector R&D at the forefront of high-energy physics., * Lead the hardware development and integration of the scintillating-fibre (SciFi) part of the Mighty Tracker for LHCb Upgrade II.

  • Develop and maintain readout, firmware, and DAQ interfaces in collaboration with CERN and partner institutes.
  • Coordinate production and testing of readout electronics, fibre modules, and cooling mechanics.
  • Oversee laboratory work on detector assembly and system performance characterization.
  • Supervise students and oversee technical staff, The position is salaried and based on the collective agreement of the Länder (TV-L). If the personal and collective agreement requirements are met, the employee will receive pay grade E13 TV-L.

Requirements

Do you have experience in Python?, Do you have a Doctoral degree?, * a PhD in particle physics or a related field.

  • Detector Physics.
  • Programming (ideally Python, C++, at least one of the two).
  • Experience with electronics development, data acquisition, and system integration.
  • Ideally experience with SiPM readout.

Benefits & conditions

In order to fill a fixed-term position in full-time (39.83 hours/week = 100%) starting on 01.03.2026, we are looking for a, * A full-time position at TV-L E13, with level and step commensurate with experience.

  • Workplace located in Bochum, Germany - a dynamic university city of about 100,000 residents, close to Düsseldorf, Dortmund, and the Sauerland nature reserve.
  • Regular business trips to CERN for detector integration, testing, and project meetings.
