Job description
- Develop, own, and maintain technical architectures that support the organisation's digital strategy and service delivery goals.
- Design end-to-end technology solutions across applications, integration, data, and infrastructure layers.
- Ensure architectural designs meet operational, security, performance, and resilience requirements.
- Work with engineers, product managers, delivery managers, and security specialists to deliver robust, user-focused digital services.
- Provide technical leadership across programmes, ensuring alignment with enterprise architecture frameworks and GDS standards.
- Evaluate technical options, conduct feasibility assessments, and make informed recommendations.
- Govern the use of technologies, patterns, and engineering standards across delivery teams.
- Support cloud adoption and platform evolution (eg, AWS, Azure), ensuring adherence to best practices and cost optimisation.
- Contribute to the development of reusable architecture patterns, reference designs, and technical documentation.
- Promote modern engineering practices such as CI/CD, microservices, API-led architectures, and event-driven systems.
- Mentor and guide engineers and associate architects to build capability across the organisation.
Requirements
- Proven experience designing large-scale technical architectures in complex or regulated environments.
- Strong understanding of cloud platforms (AWS/Azure) and modern application hosting patterns.
- Expertise in at least one architecture domain: application, integration, infrastructure, security, or cloud.
- Experience working with microservices, APIs, event-driven architectures, and containerisation.
- Knowledge of modern engineering practices including DevOps, automation, CI/CD, and infrastructure-as-code.
- Ability to produce clear architectural artefacts and communicate complex concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience working in agile, multidisciplinary delivery teams.
- Understanding of security principles, threat modelling, and data protection legislation (eg, GDPR).
