Job description
- Lead the design and evolution of backend services, APIs, and data models.
- Define system architecture for scale, resilience, and observability.
- Mentor engineers in backend fundamentals: data modelling, API design, distributed systems.
- Collaborate with product and frontend engineers to define contracts and integrations.
- Improve developer experience: CI/CD, service templates, and tooling.
Key responsibilities
Architecture
Define service boundaries; pick patterns (modular monolith, microservices); data schema evolution; API versioning.
Systems & Delivery
Build and maintain APIs (REST/GraphQL); manage background jobs; ensure strong observability (logs, metrics, tracing).
Reliability
Capacity planning, incident response, SLOs; design for fault tolerance.
Leadership
Set standards in code quality, documentation, and design; mentor others in backend craftsmanship.
Requirements
- ~8+ years of backend engineering experience.
- Expertise in at least one modern backend language (Node/TS, Go, Python, etc.).
- Strong with relational databases (Postgres or similar) and data modelling.
- Experience with distributed systems concepts: queues, async jobs, event-driven design.
- Pragmatic engineering: balancing speed and scalability.
