Chief Technology Officer

HiCareer is supporting a remote-first financial automation SaaS company ( 60 employees across Europe) in finding a Chief Technology Officer (CTO). The company helps businesses automate financial operations, reconcile payments, and connect with ERP/accounting systems - demanding secure, reliable and scalable backend architecture. As CTO, you will lead the engineering function (currently 15-20 people), set the long-term technical direction, and ensure the platform scales as the customer base and product complexity grow. What you'll do * Own the long-term technical strategy, architecture and cloud vision * Lead and mentor engineering managers, tech leads and senior engineers * Oversee and optimise the AWS ecosystem: reliability, scalability, cost, performance * Strengthen engineering processes, delivery culture and technical excellence * Collaborate closely with product leadership on roadmap and capacity planning * Drive initiatives around platform security, observability and compliance readiness * Build team structure for the next stage of growth (hiring, levelling, leadership gaps) * Represent engineering in leadership and investor-level discussions Node.js/TypeScript, Python, PostgreSQL, AWS (serverless & container-based services), Docker, Terraform, GitHub Actions, and modern APIs (REST/OpenAPI). The first six months * Conduct a full technical audit and present a strategic 12-24 month roadmap * Strengthen engineering leadership structure and clarify responsibilities * Improve system reliability and performance for mission-critical workflows * Establish clear engineering KPIs and reporting structures * Identify and address key architectural bottlenecks * Build a hiring and scaling plan aligned with product

needs Who are we looking for? * 7+ years of engineering experience, with leadership roles in SaaS environments * Deep understanding of AWS and cloud-native architectures * Track record scaling engineering teams (15+ people) and building leadership layers * Solid experience with security, compliance, observability and distributed systems * Strong communication skills and ability to balance strategy with pragmatic delivery * Fluent in English and comfortable operating in fully remote organisations Experience from fintech, payments, or financial systems is highly valued.
