Job description

We have an exciting opportunity within the Proactive Conditioning team in South Manchester to be instrumental in delivering a programme of proactive mains cleaning and cyclic maintenance. You'll be active in proactive and cyclic work (planned work) - excluding reactive (in day event work). Being a dedicated resource to focus on delivering a more agile and proactive approach to mains cleaning that includes all mains materials, including training to use new innovative methods of mains Cleaning, if required. You'll provide an agile response to alleviate any developing discolouration issues and to resolve issues for the customer today and minimising further customer impact. You'll be supporting the local asset owners within a predefined geographical area in the delivery of the Distribution Operations Maintenance Strategy (DOMS): Mains conditioning and service conditioning Water Distribution Mains. You'll need to flex geographically dependent on where the work is identified within your predefined hub.

Accountabilities & Responsibilities

  • You'll be responsible for three core activities: proactive mains conditioning, cyclic flushing and cleaning and service cleaning.
  • You'll also be responsible for increased proactive mains cleaning via the Network Scada system and the DOMS+ Tier 1 process and taking part in increased cyclical maintenance activities including targeted removal of deposition in low flow zones.

You'll also be responsible for:

  • Maintaining instrumentation.
  • Managing the equipment and delivering the PODDS methodology.
  • Managing the loggers to record data via the software.
  • Analysing data and ensuring appropriate action is taken following readings.
  • Delivering the service clean technology and managing the customer experience and associated engagement throughout that journey.
  • Using appropriate customer communication which could involve text blast or leaflet dropping for example.
  • Supporting the planned mains cleaning programme using new technologies if required.
  • Allocation of work related to cyclic maintenance
  • Enabling and delivering asset optimisation and improvement opportunities to reduce taste, smell and appearance customer contacts.
  • Turnover of dead-ends, low-velocity zones that are assessed as being at risk of build-up of potential discolouration particles through sedimentation. This will be supported by hydraulic modelling to identify low velocity risk zones.
  • Regular refreshing of water at strategic locations such as boundary valves between DMAs in order to mitigate the risk of discolouration should they need to be operated during a network event.
  • Flushing of mains in targeted areas following an event such as a burst. In addition to the post-event response, flushing will be completed to remove any residual material that settles following a network disturbance, and mitigate the risk of potential post-event background discolouration contacts.
  • Using turbidity monitors as required to monitor Water Quality.
  • Undertaking network risk assessments and review with local NT if required.
  • Ensuring contractor sign-off for work undertaken by 3rd parties on assets under your responsibility, as part of the work authorisation process.
  • Undertaking local network investigations and improvements.
  • Valve operation as part of targeted conditioning work.

Requirements

  • To be considered for this role you'll need to have reached an educational standard of GCSE grade C or equivalent, relevant City and Guilds or BTEC or ability to demonstrate technical and customer skills.
  • You'll need to be able to demonstrate water network technical experience and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
