Job description

Are you ready to play a key role in shaping the UK's energy infrastructure? We're looking for an experienced Protection & Control (P&C) Engineer to lead high-voltage substation design projects, working on complex, multidisciplinary teams delivering essential energy services across the country. The Role: As Lead Design Protection & Control Engineer, you will take ownership of the full P&C design process-from initial concept through to construction-ready delivery. You'll work closely with colleagues across HV plant, cables, civils, and project management, ensuring designs are practical, high-quality, and meet client expectations. You'll also mentor junior engineers, contribute to tender specifications, and support commissioning activities. Responsibilities of the Lead Protection & Control Engineer:

  • Lead end-to-end P&C design for 132kV-400kV substations
  • Collaborate with internal teams and clients to ensure seamless project delivery
  • Approve drawings and third-party designs, specifying relays, CTs, VTs, and other equipment
  • Conduct protection grading studies and generate relay settings
  • Review and create AC/DC schematics, protection diagrams, and tender documents
  • Support commissioning plans and attend panel meetings
  • Mentor junior engineers and manage project resources efficiently

Requirements

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering (or similar)
  • 8+ years' electrical design experience, including 4+ years on UK transmission projects
  • Strong knowledge of HV substations and UK design standards
  • Hands-on experience with protection relays, CT/VT sizing, and AC/DC drawings
  • Familiarity with ETAP, DIgSILENT, and standards such as IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus
